Populaire at the Kimball

International Film: A small-town girl discovers an untapped skill for speed typing that might just take her farther than she ever expected in this romantic comedy set in the late 1950s. Upon turning 21, Rose Pamphyle (Deborah Francois) throws caution to the wind, leaves her small town home, and applies for a secretarial job at a high-profile advertising agency run by Louis Echard (Romain Duris). Rose fails to impress her potential new boss until she reveals her incredible typing abilities. Louis offers her the job, but only if she can win an upcoming speed-typing competition. Determined to succeed, Rose begins training with Louis as her coach. Once love enters the picture, Rose realizes there is much more at stake than a simple job. French/English/German with subtitles

A review: The cheerfully frothy Populaire may lack substance, but its visual appeal -- and director Roinsard's confident evocation of 1950s filmmaking tropes -- help carry the day
