Movies and Meaning was started in October, 2007 as way to bring people together from various spiritual, religious, and philosophical perspectives who have in common a love of meaningful movies.
I personally started the group after I realized how often I was turning to contemporary movies in order to paint a picture of a spiritual theme in my weekly sermons. But, because I am just as comfortable in emerging spiritualities and other traditions as I am in the Christian tradition I didn't want it to be limited to a Christian reflection on the movies, but a deeper reflection on spiritual values, whatever their source and origin.
Presently the group meets on the third Thursday of the month in the evening. We enjoy the movie together and then retreat to a pub, wine bar, or eating establishment for refreshments and conversation. Most often we frequent the independent, small theaters but stay open to other blockbuster films if they seem to promise good discussion around what we find most meaningful in our lives.
Join us if you love movies, enjoy people, and like to talk about what is important to you!
The group is sponsored by Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
