Happy People: A Year In The Taiga

Werner Herzog takes viewers on yet another unforgettable journey into remote and extreme natural landscapes. The acclaimed filmmaker presents this visually stunning documentary about the life of indigenous people living in the heart of the Siberian Taiga. Deep in the wilderness, far away from civilization, 300 people inhabit the small village of Bakhtia at the river Yenisei. There are only two ways to reach this outpost: by helicopter or boat. There‘s no telephone, running water or medical aid, The locals, whose daily routines have barely changed over the last centuries, live according to their own values and cultural traditions. With insightful commentary written and narrated by Herzog, Happy People: A Year in the Taiga follows one of the Siberian trappers through all four seasons of the year to tell the story of a culture virtually untouched by modernity.

Wonderful scenery and story, though a little too happy and too outdoorsy.

Amazing look at an incredibly hard lifestyle seemingly well integrated into a very harsh environment. I got the sense that any less than full involvement/commitment is fatal - no room for careless error at sub-zero temperatures. I think I may quit whining about our cold winter temperatures (not!). Thanks for putting this together, Laurel. Had a good time with a fun group.

I just got back from my meetup group and we saw "Happy People". It is on eof those movies that keeps rolling round and round in your head as there were so many aspects to it. I highly recommend it. I would like the new people I met to know that I enoyed them also and look forward to sharing more good times with them.

    I plan to join you!
Does anyone know if the ticket can be purchased an hour before the film or does it have to be earlier?

    • Anita

Hollye, I just walk up and get the ticket when I am going in to the movie. Doesn't have to be in advance! But DO mention the Meet-Up group rate.

    • Laurel

Yes, Anita is correct you can purchase your ticket right before the movie starts.

I sure hope the time and date that you decide on will work for me. I really have liked Herzog's films. In fact, I think he has a pretty interesting life doing the variety of films he's done.
