Let's go see the movie On The Road

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles and based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac,ON THE ROAD tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund),a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart).Traveling cross-country, Sal and Dean venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” -- the pure essence of experience. Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women -- Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each impacting their journey indelibly.

Here is an interesting website to explore.

Neal Cassady estate ... by his wife and family ... Camille was Carolyn and they had 3 children and lived in San Jose ... then house with a pool in Los Gatos.

Check out the family pics and more http://www.nealcassadyestate.com/family.html

    Cheers!

That IS interesting. Heart Beat, mentioned in that site, is the other movie about the Beats that I was trying to recall that night. I never saw it. Amazing to learn that Monte Sereno is where they lived.

    Well, that film was...um...interesting.
It was nice to hang out with folks afterwards. Would have been even better had I been able to hear above the din. Next time I guess we need to choose a place that is not a rowdy bar.

Yes, keep your eyes open for a place to meet after the movie.

I wonder how Betty's Burgers would be? Seems spacious enough, probably not too crowded late evening, manifold food & drink choices sans a rowdy bar crowd.

Not at all what I expected.

Always good to get together with everybody and we had a good time. Thanks Laurel! I'm glad I saw the movie. I felt it probably gave a good look and feel for the times (I don't remember the 50's). Times have changed a lot so it is hard identify with the characters' antics which would have had a very different context in that era. As was mentioned in discussion, much of the movie looked like today's "spring break" only in the 50's - same activities on a different playing field. This was not an "Aha" moment film - more an immersion experience. Also, "Dean" characters are interesting - they mess up peoples lives but they also make things happen and catalyze life changes. Glad I saw the movie and the discussion afterwards help to bring that about. Once again, thanks for organizing this, Laurel.

Hi Laurel. I'm up for my first movie with the group tonight. What's the protocol? Where does everyone meet...just outside the theater?
