Let's go see the movie "The Girls in the Band"

They wiggled, they jiggled, they wore low cut gowns and short shorts, they kowtowed to the club owners and smiled at the customers...and they did it all, just to play the music they loved. THE GIRLS IN THE BAND is a documentary that tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30's to the present day. These incredibly talented women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today a new breed of gifted young women is taking their rightful place in the world of jazz which can no longer deny their talents.

trying to help out here:these kind of messages are not usually put in general event comments for everyone to get in their email and read. i suggest you check your profile preferences and allow pvt. messages from meetup to get to you on the receiving end. the sender of an email via meetup has a choice at the end of each message as to whether you want the intended recipient to get your private email address or not... when responding to a message sent via meetup and not giving the sender's pvt. email address, just go to the person's profile and respond back via the link. do not respond to the email unless it has the sender's private address. if it has something like info at meetup and you "reply" we will all get to read what was said. hope that helps:)

sorry I didn't join the group after I met a new friend at this movie and she treated me to dinner. I would have like to hear what others thought about it. I enjoyed it a lot and I think I was well primed having two daughters.

i knew mostly male jazz musicians in nyc. interesting that although they told me how hard it was for top name female jazz "singers" to travel the road, they never told me much about the female musicians and yes, they were all male bands, most of these old timers dead by now. so, now i know why i was never enlightened given the sexist attitudes described. having a multi-racial family, this movie was a double whammy for me as well. didn't think to bring tissues for the tears.

    thanks for organizing this pam.

Hi Ane. There are several places. There's a parking garage on the corner of Cedar and Church and several large lots near the church, which is across the street from the theater.

As much as I was hoping to make it, I'm afraid I have too much work to do to get there in time. Enjoy! It looks fantastic.

having hung around sweet basil's in nyc for a good portion of my single life back east, many of the old time musicians (mostly now deceased like doc cheatham ) and ellington's grandson who bar tended there told me about these times for women. it was also hard for men and thus some gave it up or took long breaks. so, this is a definite must see for me.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
