Hello & Welcome to the "Movies with a Message" Meetup Group.
My name is Jason and I am thrilled you have found your way here! Life gifts us with so many meaningful "coincidences", and I believe that you are here reading this right now for a reason. If it's okay with you, I'd like to explore this idea a little further and ask you to try something with me...
... please think back, to a time when you watched a movie that you remember REALLY enjoying. Maybe it's one of your all-time favourite movies, or it had some special significance to you at the time you watched it. Take a moment to remember how good you felt... Can you remember what that was like?
Wouldn't it be fantastic to re-experience those wonderful feelings, but even more intensely than before? (I hope you just thought "Yes!", or gave a little nod - I did, as I was proof-reading this!)
But with so many movies available to watch now-a-days, it can be quite a challenge knowing what to choose. Today's busy lifestyle means we usually don't have much spare time available, so the last thing you'd want to do is waste a couple of hours of your life on a movie that turns out to more of a disappointment than entertainment. One possible solution could be to choose a movie that is highly recommended by others, especially if they have similar values to you.
Have you ever wondered, "What is it that makes a movie great?" For example, is it the actors? Or the director? Or the story? Maybe it's the sets, special effects or costumes? I could go on & on, but instead, here's my own answer to this question:
A GREAT MOVIE... IS ONE THAT MAKES YOU *FEEL* GREAT!
(I believe it really is as simple as that, and judging the movie by any other criteria is completely missing the point.)
At the core of our being, aren't we all driven by the desire to feel good and experience pleasure (or avoid pain) throughout our life? Sometimes, "feeling good" might only involve a tiny step up the emotional scale, for example from the depths of misery to merely feeling depressed. Or it might be a shift from depression to hopefulness, or from hopefulness to enthusiasm or to passion! Experiencing a state of absolute bliss might be wonderful in theory, but in real-life the transition to this feeling place often seems blocked by a barrage of outside factors that we may feel are not in our control.
When we watch a movie, we have an opportunity to "let go" of whatever's bothering us in our life. Some movies are able to touch us in a way that can activate our positive feelings and give us fresh hope for a brighter future. Even though everything in our life is still the same as it was before the movie started, we now somehow see things in a different light and feel a sense of inspiration, purpose or passion. This can happen for anyone, regardless of their current circumstances or situation. Of course usually the effect is only temporary, but it is also very possible that a movie can literally be life-changing!
Now isn't THAT the type of movie you'd love to experience?? Becoming immersed in a movie that has real meaning to you, awakening a deeper part inside you to a whole new possibility or belief about life. There are movies that can be so profound that you are left KNOWing that your life will never be the same again. A movie might even trigger you to discover your own life's purpose, or perhaps give you the feeling of gratitude for what you already have (or the confidence that you can make a difference). And even if all of this seems far-fetched and you don't think it could happen to you, at least you've been distracted (and hopefully entertained) for a couple of hours. Either way, an inspirational movie with a message can be a wonderful bridge to feeling so much better!
Let's explore this a step further: Consider what would happen if two or more people share the experience of a watching a movie like this together... Could that enhance the outcome even further? ABSOLUTELY!!! Right now, I have just given you a glimpse of the real intention behind the "Movies with a Message" Meetup Group... Here's what we are all about:
This group was formed to give anyone who is wanting, an opportunity to experience some of the movies that have had a positive impact on people's lives. For example, movies such as "Pay It Forward", "What the Bleep do we know" and "The Secret" are some of the better known titles that are recognised as potentially life-changing and able to influence the way people view the world. There are so many more meaningful movies that contain a wonderful message, but unfortunately, you might not easily find them at the cinema or your local DVD store.
For example, have you heard of the movie "Illusion" (with Kirk Douglas) or "Indigo" (starring Neale Donald Walsch)? How about "The Law of Attraction in Action", "The Power of Intention", or "The Secret behind 'The Secret'"? There are literally hundreds of titles which are virtually unheard of by most people, simply because they fall outside of the hollywood big-budget category. Yet so many of these movies can touch and inspire in ways that go far beyond what anyone could experience by watching a typical mainstream cinema-release movie.
A lot of the time we actually don't even know what we're missing out on, because there is very little money spent on promoting the lesser-known independent movies (and sometimes these are the ones with the biggest message to share). I assume the reason is that most of the big players view the movie industry as just another form of business, where appealing to the biggest market (and making money) is their number one priority.
Fortunately I believe this limitation can be overcome, thanks to the power of the internet and community spirit. Fueled by my own passion for movies with a message, it is my desire to promote and share these lesser-known movies with others and in doing so, make a difference and uplift as many people as I can along the way. Maybe this is wishful thinking... Or maybe it's creative planning!
You see, part of the magic of joining our "Movies with a Message" Meetup is that you will have free access to a unique and ever-growing list of amazing movies designed to touch, inspire or motivate you. In addition to this, we regularly organise our own "Movie Nights", where a group of us will meet together (often hosted in one of our Member's homes) to watch a movie from our list.
Each movie is chosen by considering the feedback, suggestions and recommendations of our participating Members who have attended previous Movie Nights. In essence, our Members are determining the future direction of the Movie Nights, and this can only mean a better experience for everyone. I also help by personally importing various movies that may not be easily available in Australia (such as the "Spiritual Cinema Circle" DVD's and a large range of personal growth/self-development style documentaries).
I hope you've already made the decision to join our Meetup group and attend one of our upcoming Movie Nights, but so far I've only explained one small part of what we do... (By the way, thank you for reading this far - it gets better!!)
On a typical Movie Night, the biggest benefits often don't become apparent until after the movie has finished! This is the time when those of us who wish to remain will stay and participate in a group discussion. Usually we start with a brief review of the movie's main theme, along with the message(s) that we each identify. Some people initially just sit and listen, but before long, everyone gets involved in a meaningful conversation that ends up raising the energy of everyone in the room.
Because of the encouraging group atmosphere, we unveil all sorts of fascinating and unique perceptions about what the movie meant to each person. The conversation then becomes even deeper, as we explore some of what's going on in our own lives and feel the support of everyone (because now we are all relating to each other from an authentic place of being). From the feedback we've received after previous Movie Nights, the sharing of the movie combined with the group discussion has opened the door to new hope and valuable insights for many people. Naturally, it's also led to new friendships being formed, too.
Can you imagine this...? You watch a meaningful movie with a group of like-minded people, then enjoy a friendly (yet very meaningful) conversation with a common theme of everyone wanting to help each other grow, learn and become more alive and aware than we were just an hour or two ago! Don't be at all surprised if, after you've experienced this once or twice, you find yourself intentionally changing your schedule to make sure you can attend the next Movie Night. You also have the benefit that it's a night-out that's as inexpensive as a night-in, yet it'll leave you feeling so much better! Most of our Movie Nights are free to attend, so your only cost is to make your way there and perhaps bring along a simple snack to share on the night. Some of our Members even take turns car-pooling, to minimise the cost of transport.
I continually look forward to each new Movie Night and for me it's a unique experience each and every time. I'd like to share with you something that I've noticed about that... Even if I have already watched the same movie many times before, by seeing it again with different people, I find that somehow this changes the experience. Either I discover something new, or I become inspired again in a slightly different or deeper way. And participating in the group discussion after the movie really helps raise the experience to a whole new level. (Didn't our ancestors sit gathered around a fire, sharing stories and discussing their lives and beliefs? It worked for them, so maybe we need to make the time to do that in our lives too.)
There's not much more I can say, other than this truly is a remarkable experience. It's difficult to put into words just how much my life (and many other people's) has already been impacted. Somehow this feels like just the beginning, with so much more that is yet to emerge from these gatherings. Maybe there will be a far-reaching "ripple effect" that could impact others in ways we can't even begin to imagine?
If there's a part of you yearning to connect with like-minded people, wanting to share meaningful conversations, or you'd just like to watch a beautiful hand-picked Movie with a Message; then I warmly welcome and invite you to join us at one of our upcoming Movie Nights.
If you're not aleady a Member of our group, please take a moment to join this Meetup... Then you might like to explore our calendar of events to read about past Movie Nights, or to see which movies are coming up next and reserve your seat. Please keep in mind that we only have space for a limited number of people at each Movie Night, so it's always wise to book in early to reserve your place if you know you'd like to attend.
I hope you'll try it - even just once. Think of it as like having a mini-holiday, as you become completely present and experience a "Movie with a Message" with us. And I look forward to meeting you there and hearing your feedback, too.
Yours in gratitude,
Jason (Founder & Organiser)
