Hike Mt. Shasta

  • Needs a location

  • Hi all, I'd be really interested in hiking Mt. Shasta in April or the first part of May. Is anyone out there interested in making it a day hike some Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday with (forecasted) good weather?

Hi, I wanted to do it on June 7th. Be in Mt Shasta on Friday around 4, go to Ranger Station and 5th Season for info and to rent the gear. Sleep in my car at Bunny Flat and then start early on Saturday.
jindati, if you wanted to go with me, we could meet in Ashland at the Outdoor Store before that and discuss
the plan. It might be easier to rent the gear there, because we have to return it on Sunday.......
Let me know, what you think.
Should we schedule this for the 6/ 7th?

I don't think anyone is going this weekend. Tony sent me a phone message that he no longer is organizing it...He could not find a guide. What the hell would we need a guide for? People climb it all the time. There is is organizer. So yes Kara I would be interested in early June

I was just up black butte about 2 weeks ago cold and relentless(smaller mountain adjacent to Mt. Shasta) very slippery.....but doable....I myself wouldn't chance the big mountain yet..... :) but then again I have a 200+ mile relay comming up and can't risk any injuries.....

How are the hiking conditions now?

From what I know, most people hike up to around Lake Helen, stay overnight and the next morning start out real early and hike to the top and all the way down. There might be other routes, however.
Right now it is not advised to take Avalanche Gulch, not because of danger of avalanches, but rockfall.
    Check the website: shastaavalanche.org.
I started getting into shape for the climb.
I heard, while it is a shorter hike to top of Mt. McLaughlin, that hike actually being more strenuous.
I think there is snow on Mt. McLaughlin right now.
Keep me informed, I have some books on climbing Mt Shasta, but it would be great if we could find someone who has done it.
Helmets, snow axes and cramp-ons seem to be necessary to make the climb.

Hmmmm....I live in Weed and I'm thinking if we get the snow expected....a little later in the spring to hike Mt. Shasta.. but Bunny Flats would be a great starting point :) Even a dead fall lake hike possibly what a gorgeous hike it is! It totals about an 8 mile hike.....great fun!

Hi Kimberlee, I just joined the group. With this lack of snow we have had I wondered how difficult would it be to summit Shasta this week and about how long to the top on average? Just looked at Bunny Flats you mentioned ,the hike looks similar to Mt. McLaughlin here by me, guessing 6 to 7 hours up and back? Thanks,Todd

Hello :) glad you joined us! I must say it has been YEARS since I have hiked Mt. Shasta.......I was in my teens......we would without a doubt need a guide to volunteer. And yes I'm thinking (if my memory serves me right..I'm getting old...haha) its around 6-7 depending on the pace of the group. O..and the mountain is virtually snow free :/ I should take a drive up Everett Memorial hwy and check to see how it looks up there.... nice to meet you, Kim... :)
