Hamilton Woods in Hamilton Ma.

Hamilton woods has been a favorite place for our group to hunt for mushrooms in the last few years. It's trails are well maintained and there are  maps at the trail head. Parking is along Chebacco Rd. We are actually planning 3 hunts at this location this year. June, August, and October in order to show you what different kinds of mushrooms grow at different times of the season. These dates will pe posted soon on our calandar. In past years we have found many edibles. In fact, last year we found so many chicken mushrooms, that everyone got to take home a bagful of these delictable edibles. Feel free to contact Rick Pierro or Jean Saunders with any questions. Hope to see you there!

I'm inspired to find more platter-full (?) mushrooms locally - is it a safe one to identify on my own (I'm just a beginner!). Or are there poison ones I should be aware of?

Hi Sarah, It was great to meet you at Hamilton Woods. The platterful is a Spring mushroom and usually goes away when Spring does, although there will be some stragglers. If you are not sure if it is the platterful, please do not eat it. Jimmy is always available by e-mail to identify anything that you find. Just send him a photo of all parts of the mushroom as soon as you can and he will try to tell you what it is. Remember, there are 40,000 different varieties of fungi in North America alone. We try our best to identify what we find but some remain a mystery. Only eat what you can positively identify as safe to eat. Hope this helps. Hope to see you again soon. Jean

Thanks Jean. I know for a beginner some are easy to id like the chicken mushroom - but the Platterful has me concerned as I am not sure it's as easy for a newbie to be sure of! It was good to meet you - and thank you (and Jim) for all of your help!

Hi! I'm new to the group, and new to hunting mushrooms - I'm excited to learn some things - is the upcoming day out a good place to do that? I'm afraid I don't have a lot of knowledge to offer the group at the moment but do have a positive attitude, fun heart, and inquisitive exploratory nature!

    May 29, 2013

    • Jean S.

Yes, Sarah, Hamilton Woods is a great place to hunt. With all the rain and the upcoming heatwave, there should be a variety of fungi. There are many knowledgeable members that can answer any and all questions that you have.
