Boxford State Forest in North Andover Ma.

  • Jun 29, 2013 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Boxford State Forest is in a secluded area of North Andover. We hunted there last season and had great luck finding edibles. The parking lot will accommodate around 15 cars, but you are free to park along Sharpener's Rd. as well. The trails are plentiful, but can be confusing, so we will print off trail maps for anyone who needs one. Last year some members used the GPS feature on their cell phones to maneuver the trails which proved to be very helpful. Boxford State Forest is easy to find. From 114 West,Take the first right after the "Welcome to North Andover" sign and travel to the end of Sharpener's Pond Rd. You will drive right into the parking lot. See you there!

In spite of the favorable conditions, we did not find much. One medium sized chicken and quite a few boletes. The rain held off and we all enjoyed the day.

Nice, but limited from the rainfall.

I'm with Sue. I am also new to mushroom hunting and was looking forward to it. The chance of rain for North Andover tomorrow is 40%. Seriously, if you have a hobby that takes you into the woods, shouldn't you have waterproof boots and/or other rain gear? Disappointed.

We were looking forward to it as well Patricia. If you have been to any of our organized hunts in the past, we bring quite alot of stuff like books, tables, mushrooms etc. all of which is in jeopardy of getting soaked. If you check your e-mail, I have sent out a notice of an impromptu hunt that members can choose to come to.

I am sorry this meetup is cancelled. I do not know anything about edible mushrooms from the wild, and I was depending on the appearance of someone who would let me tag along and tutor me.

If it rains and it looks likely, most members would not show up. We work from several books and cannot take the chance of getting these wet. It's also likely that alot of trails will be impassable due to large muddy puddles. Please join us on July 13th at Breakheart Reservation in Wakefield. Check the site for details.

What are the prospects about this meet taking place Saturday? From my side of the world, it does not look too promising. Any ideas?

They're saying showers and stormy, but they don't say what part of the day. If it's not raining in the morning, consider the hunt still on. You may want to bring a light slicker in case it rains while we are out there. Unless you are the wicked witch of the west, you won't melt with a little precipitation.

I figure if is is only as rainy as today has been, it might be a bit drizzly from time to time, but I suppose we really just need to see what the Saturday morning forecast says.

going to go ahead and bail out this weekend. The weather looks scary and its too far to travel for scary weather. Hopefully we'll catch a break next time. Y'all have fun and get lots of mushrooms!

If it is weathering like it is today I probably won't come down for the adventure. This rain should make foraging a treat too- though i have not found any Chickens up my way in southern me.this time of the year.
