End of Summer Hunt at Hamilton Woods

This hunt is second in a three part series at the same location in Hamilton Woods in Hamilton. We want to show you how you will find different species of fungi at different times in the season. Although some varieties will show up throughout the warmer season such as chicken mushrooms, there are varieties that are only present durring the dead of summer of fall. We can compare the different varieties through photos of our hunts here.

Wanted to also say thanks for the chicken mushroom. Sauteed them up with butter and garlic then mixed them with some squash in vodka/marinara/cream sauce and parmesan. Good stuff.

Hi All...I loved the chicken mushrooms...amazing flavor with just saute in olive oil and a little salt. I have been keeping my eyes open...and found some that could be young chickens. Can I send some photos of them to someone's email to take a look at? Theo

Thank you all for a great afternoon of mushroom-picking! It was my first MLUSA hunt, and it was fun and informative. One question came up afterwards: I read online that it's not recommended to eat chicken of the woods if it grows on cedar or eucalyptus trees, since it can absorb toxins from them -- does anyone know if this is truly a concern? Which trees are safe to pick chicken of the woods from? Thanks!

thanks for the mushrooms. I cooked the white hen of the woods with chicken pineapple and bok choy. Tonight I cooked the sulphurated ones with bluefish tomatoes and basil. Yum.

Glad you liked them. FYI these were chicken mushrooms, not hen of the woods. Hen of the woods is an entirely different mushroom. They usually appear in the fall. They are edible as well.

Great walk in the woods, but we missed the group. 1) We arrived a little late, at 10.45 , and everyone was already foraging. 2) We went on a long walk around the woods, got a little bit lost, and returned at 13.15, when everyone was gone home, but for Jim and Jean, Dakota, and couple of stragglers. Brought back lots of mushrooms, and now I believe I’m qualified for a position as guide in the Hamilton Woods. ;~))

    Hi Leslie,
Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, couldn't make it to the train on time! Hope to meet you in the future.

    Elena/Utah,
I can offer you both a ride if you take the 9:30 train from North Station to Beverly (1st stop after Salem). It arrives at Beverly Depot at 10:03. I will wait in the parking lot on the side where Designer Bath and Moynahan Lumber is. [masked] (cell).

I know this is last minute, just confirm if you can make it so I don't wait too long. I don't want to be late for my 1st MLUSA meet! :)

Again, can't join. I just returned from Minnesota where we filled baskets with chanterelles and blueberries one day, and with lobster mushrooms another day. It was heaven on earth.
Hope to see you all later in the season.

I wish you could have been there! Last season they picked 10 pounds of chants. We were a little early for that this year - but what a thrill to see those little beauties popping up all around.
