The Steel Wheels

Just for a change of pace from jazz, opera and classical, we’ll be seeing and listening to a very special group tonight that, frankly, plays my favorite music – a mix of traditional country, blues and with a tinge of bluegrass. Our venue is the Cleveland legend, Wilbert’s on Huron near the Quicken Loans Arena! The CAVs are out of town so parking will be a breeze.

7 p.m. – Dinner at Wilbert's Food & Music, 812 Huron Avenue E., 216.902.4663. There is no minimum and a food purchase is not required. For a map please click here. MAP

Parking: There should be plenty of free (after 6 p.m., but check postings) parking on the street and even in unattended nearby lots. Since the Indians are on the road, finding a spot should be a breeze.

Wilbert’s is Cleveland’s premier restaurant/roots music venue. With a huge room and a great sound system, Wilbert’s Food & Music is the place to go downtown for a great meal and a top-notch concert.

Open for the quality music showcase features a bistro-style menu with new ideas alongside old Ninth Street favorites, affordable appetizers, and a stellar draft list.

An adult music venue that’s still in the hospitality business; a place where you can get a drink, full-service food, and an intimate concert experience-Wilbert’s promises to deliver some of the finest in live national, regional, and local roots, blues, folk, world, jam, reggae, jazz, acoustic, pop, rock, indie and soul music downtown at a safe and conveniently located club at 812 Huron Road East. Also accessible on Bolivar, directly across from Progressive Field and next to the The "Q" Arena and the Thirsty Parrott (the old Pete and Dewey’s)

8:30 p.m.The Steel Wheels band performs.  Admission is FREE but if you are pleased with the show a hat will be passed and whatever you believe is fair will be considered a donation to the Band.  I'm suggesting a $10 donation.

The $10, donation goes directly to the band. We have arranged for a meet-and-greet with band members. As well there will be CDs available for purchase and signing.

When you arrive ask to be directed to the Music Cleveland! tables. We’ll have prime reserved seats close to the stage. Because this is a fairly small and intimate venue, your RSVP is very important. We will do our best to accommodate drop-ins as space permits. Please cancel no later than 9 a.m. the morning of the event. Later cancellations will be considered as “no-shows.”

The Steel Wheels

On the road and in the studio, The Steel Wheels are tapping into Americana traditions and creating fresh-sounding acoustic fervor. The band's new album Lay Down Lay Low succeeds in capturing the fire-in-the-belly spirit of the band's mesmerizing live shows wile fine-tuning carefully crafted lyrical stories that surprise the ear and linger in the heart. Like the Shenandoah Valley that the band calls home, Lay Down Lay Low reveals both light and shadow, providing a musical landscape for songs that chronicle and celebrate what the band describes as "the good struggle."

The chemistry of the musicians and a flare for honest storytelling roots the album in fertile ground. Acoustic instrumentation escorts the listener into a slow dance or a full-throttle ride, while lead vocals from Trent Wagler soar and find the perfect complement in supporting vocals from mandolin player Jay Lapp, with bass player Brian Dickel and fiddler Eric Brubaker joining for soul-thrilling harmonies. "Americana music at its very best!" said Larry Groce of Mountain Stage.

For this hard-touring band, Lay Down Lay Low is the worthy follow-up to Red Wing , which ranked in the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Year in 2010, after spending 13 weeks on the Top 40 Americana radio charts and, notably, landing as the second-highest ranked album of all independent releases that year. Red Wing also cracked the EuroAmericana Top 10 and Folk charts and racked up five Independent Music Awards nominations, winning Best Country Song.

"If one must compare The Steel Wheels to another act in order to get an idea of their music imagine a blend of the passion of the Avett Brothers, the instrumentals of Old Crow Medicine Show and then sprinkle in the backwoods feel of The Legendary Shack Shakers. In truth attempting to compare them with anyone is an injustice, since after one listen you can hear that they stand very well on their own perch," John Walker, Americana Roots.

"The Steel Wheels are certainly going places... on the line between old timey folk and something raw, new and bluegrassy. Catch Trent and company on their way to fame and glory." said "Cover Lay Down" magazine.

The Steel Wheels Lay Down, Lay Low is a perfect blend of harmony and strings that take you back to the old home place where it was a joy to be alive.” - Larry Winters, KPFT Houston.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
