Howl'ween for dogs

Last year we had our first official Howl'ween event.  What a success!

We had a costume contest, raffle for prizes, egg hunt for the dogs, and an agility area for them to play in.

This year I'd like to do something a little less formal.

Let's have dogs in costumes on a hike, after an egg hunt.  This will be similar to the Easter Egg hunt we do each year, except the dogs will be in Halloween costumes.

Pictures, of course, will be taken.  Bring your leash...it will be needed to leave the parking lot, and return.

Wear your hiking boots/shoes.  The trail will be rocky.

So put your pup in his/her finest getup, and come on out for a hike/walk (nothing long or complex).

Location:  31st street into Red Rocks.  We will go in the "back way".  I will hide the eggs at the top of a mesa.  We'll hike up to them, and then back down a different way to the parking lot.

Let's go to lunch afterwards at Bon Ton's in Old Colorado City with the dogs as well.

If this is your first event with the us for 2013, please bring your $5 dues.  They will be collected before the event starts.

What a perfect day we had! Perfect weather, a nice stroll, and lunch on the patio afterwards. Really nice to meet those that I haven't before, and good to see "old" friends as well. Thanks all for making it a great day. (I think the dogs enjoyed themselves too).

next time in Red Rocks, we should do the off-leash areas just uphill from the west parking lot

It's an idea...but rather small area for our pooches who really like to stretch their legs.

    Hi Sandy,
Good luck on the Howloween. I did the Haunted Dog House for Safe Place for 4 years. Don't know if you've seen it but we had things that dogs were afraid of, like the Vet, crates, Vacuums. The people thought it was hysterical. We don't seem to be doing it anymore so if you decide to do it next year I'd love to help with it......Ann Gerber

Ann... I do know about the Howl'oween event for Safe Place. We decided not to do it this year, for a few reasons. We (Safe Place) may have a totally new event next year, not Halloween related. We'll see what the rescue comes up with.

Not sure what next year will bring for the Mutts group....maybe another big Howl'ween event like last year, or another low key one like this year. We'll see. Thanks for the offer. ;o)

Ok, I am directionally challenged but since 24 runs East and West, how can 31st street be on the West? It needs to be North or South.......? But just so l don't get lost, I'm I correct in that the parking lot is on 31st across from Rudy's on the South side of 24?
    Lunch sounds fun!

I think it's safe to say that 31st street Red Rock Canyon Open Space parking lot, is on the South side of US 24, and on the West side of 31st street.
