Austin Bluffs Open Space - South rim trail

  • Parking lot near

2610 Rockhurst Blvd., Colorado Springs, CO (map)

    38.898552 -104.796761

  • This time we will do the opposite side of the valley we did February 23rd. A leash is advisable to start as we will cross and walk along Rockhurst for a short distance.
Going south up the hill on Rockhurst you will encounter a roundabout at the top, 100 ft out the other side turn left (just before a small island in the road) into a parking lot and park. The parking lot is near a communication tower and a city reservoir. http://goo.gl/maps/ygp4y
The trail is a mixture of moderate and easy, with a few short steep sections. Nothing difficult, but a hiking trail, not a walking trail. We will do a loop of about 3 miles.

Drat! But as we say in Colorado Springs: We can use the moisture.

I'm canceling this hike for today. Drizzle has been falling for some time, so parts of the trail will be muddy or slick. I'll reschedule this for a better day.

I have trouble finding this parking lot - I've never found it. :( Is there a better description to find it?

Oh, wait. I think you mean the parking lot of the building. I thought I was looking for a trailhead parking lot.

This parking lot is just past the Resort at University Park apartment complex on the East side of Rockhurst. It is visible on the satellite (not the map) view of Google if you magnify the area a bit. When I bring up the link in my main description above, the downward pointer on the blue icon is actually in the parking lot. There is a small island in the middle of Rockhurst - cement with that red brick imprint used around the city - just past the entrance to the parking lot. You go through the roundabout (that also has the second entrance to the apartments) and the parking lot entrance is the next left.

Hmmm, this is my end of Rockhurst. I was thinking we were doing the Pulpit Rock trail that starts at the other end of Rockhurst off Pomona. There is plenty of parking in the apartment complex for Resort at University Park, 2nd entrance off Whistler point as well and street parking on Rockhurst.

How long do you think this will take us? It's only 3 miles, so maybe an hour and a half?

Some view spots on the trail but no side excursions so I would guess we would finish up somewhere around 11.

I really, really want to do this one but have company and plans already. I hope this one gets planned again in the near future. I don't know the trail or I'd plan it myself.
