Deepwater Creations is collaborating with a friend of ours to create a jRPG, codenamed "Wuthering Heights" for some reason. C++ with the Allegro 5 library. We're aiming for original storytelling, deep and strategic combat, and to break free from the genre's more troublesome conventions while still drawing inspiration from our favorite classics.
Games are at their best when they challenge the player. That can be in terms of skill or reflexes, but it can also be in terms of ideas. This, I think, is a great strength that indie games have - they have the ability to try new things, even to make their audience uncomfortable.
