This is a crazy idea I have. To create a kind of virtual, old-fashioned neighborhood of friends to do stuff with when its more fun to be with someone than alone. I have no idea if anyone else has a need for this kind of community, nor have I thought through the details of how to make it work. I need folks to show interest, share ideas, and share in leadership.
Purpose: Create horizontal community that transcends age and interests. Community for the sake of community. There is nothing wrong with vertical Meetup Groups. I belong to two of them! But I am wondering if there are folks like me who might enjoy a virtual neighborhood community that consists of a wide range of ages and interests.
Who should join? Anyone in Palo Alto who truly values community, neighborhood and the values they embody. People who are new to Palo Alto. People who miss old-fashioned neighborhoods where people feel known and welcome. People who like being in inter-generational groups--not just with people their own age. People who may not plan months ahead of time what they are going to do during the weekend. People who have a wide variety of interests. People who want to do stuff but don't want to do it alone or want to do it in a larger group--from a simple neighborhood barbeque to a trip to Pescadero Beach.
Why: Two reasons. First, I am a daughter of the South. I was brought up loving Southern hospitality.
Two, I am an Army Brat. Community is especially important for military families. And I have lived all over this country and enjoyed the hospitality and community of some pretty simple, friendly neighborhoods. I miss that. I know we are all super stars and crazy busy here. But I don't know why we can't have rich community in this beautiful, beautiful place as well.
