N.E. Outdoor Couples Social Gathering

You voted for Pierce Island as the location for the N.E. Outdoor Couples Social Gathering and Pot Luck as the lunch option.

The picnic area is actually on Four Tree Island which is connected to Pierce Island by a walkway. There are covered picnic tables, grills and bathrooms on Four Tree Island. This is a great location for kayaking, swimming (fresh water pool) and walks through Strawberry Banks area of Portsmouth.

Please leave a comment with what you plan to bring for the Pot Luck.

There were a lot of good ideas in our recent survey and one in particular that stood out. It was a suggestion that we have a N.E. Outdoor Couples social gathering. Here is the actual suggestion, because I think it clearly communicates the reason for a social gathering:

--------------
“I know one thing I'd like to see and would make my wife feel more comfortable is if we have social gather once in a bit... just to get people to see who the others are in the group, plan some ideas get people into the group momentum and maybe ID some asst organizers?

I'd even be up for small camping/ hike/ kayak getaway (though I think people would want to meet the people before doing something like that.) ”
----------------

Also please chat up the comments on this event.

As always, you are required to wear a PFD (Life Jacket) and whistle when paddling with this group.

Please use the following link to see what you should bring.
http://www.meetup.com/N-E-Outdoor-Couples/messages/boards/thread/33408592

• Please only one RSVP per couple, no need for +1.

NOTE: Please print, read, and sign the N.E. Outdoor Couples' liability agreement and bring it to the event. The liability agreement is located under the tab "More" - "Files". We will also have a copy at the event in case you don't bring a signed copy with you.

I thought pawtuckaway was closed due to noro virus
Please verify and make sure it has been reopened Thanks

    August 25, 2013

    • Greg N.

I just heard about the virus this morning. A look on their web site does not mention it or notify of closure. As this is weeks away, I would be doubtful if we would have a problem. We will be going in from the Deerfield back side anyway, no the main entrance.

      August 26, 2013

  • Greg N.

Darlene and I had a fun time today. We hope to see you soon, possibly on the trails.
Who's interested in a dog friendly easy to lite moderate hike at Pawtuckaway in Raymond, NH early September?

    1 · August 25, 2013

    • Alex

It appears that Pawtuckaway has a no pet policy, but many other NH parks allow pets.

      August 26, 2013

    • Greg N.

The pet policy is true if you enter through main entrance however we go in the back side where people do take there dogs in. We can not go to the lake until park closes in October but we can hike the back trails.

Alan and I had a great time meeting everybody yesterday at the pot luck. It's nice to see that there are other couples out there who appreciate the outdoors as much as we do. Doug and Susan great idea and thank you for all the hard work organizing this event as well as the paddle. Would definitely do it again!

It was great meeting a bunch of similar-minded folks. Teresa and I had a good time. Nice location, too. Thanks for setting up the gathering. Looking forward to the next one.

    Hi Everyone,
We ( Amy and Peter ) will come.
Is there a plan for the day's activities?
We'll bring some Iggies' rolls , the best bread in Boston,
    and cold cuts.
Do we all just meet at Four Tree Island , and go are separate ways for the day?
    Doug or anybody?

    August 24, 2013

    • Judy

Peter, I am wondering the same thing. Alan and I are bringing kayaks, and are also grilling food. We want to meet everyone and make sure we get the kayaks in the water, but at the same time are not out there paddling when folks are ready to eat. It looks like this starts at 10, but I can't see people ready to eat that early. Doug, what time are you kayaking?

      August 24, 2013

    • Doug N.

I thought we would start with each couple briefly talking about some outdoor activity they did this year and what activities they would like to do. Then we could talk as a group about the type of activities they would like to see. Then couples with similar interest could get together and discuss/plan some activities and hopefully someone will step up as that group’s co-organizer/host. I have made signs for different activities to help coordinate this. Then we can prepare and eat lunch. After lunch (~ 1 PM) couples can either go for a walk to Strawberry Banke area of Portsmouth or go kayaking in the protected bay on the south side of Pierce Island.

Andrew and I look forward to meeting others in the group. Looks like you are ok on burgers etc so we will bring some dessert

    August 24, 2013

  • Mike H.

We will bring paper plates, napkins and cups. We are new to the group and looking to meet everyone. Look for us in the big red double kayak.

    August 23, 2013

  • Doug N.

PLEASE reply to this "comment" indicating what you are bringing to the POT LUCK to help get a variety. Salads, breads, meats, desserts and paper plates, cups and napkins.

    July 17, 2013

    • Judy

Ok, I am bringing some burgers, buns, and mustard ketchup, etc. I see we are up to 17 couples which is great! Might be a good idea if an additional person brings a few burgers too so we have enough.

      August 23, 2013

    • Doug N.

We are bringing 32 hot dogs and rolls, 5 tableclothes.

I think Teresa is going to make some sweet tasty bars for dessert.

We can bring iced-tea, or whatever you need most.

    August 19, 2013

      Iced tea sounds great

    Sounds lovely!

This is such an excellent idea and Alan and I are so looking forward to meeting everyone! We plan to bring our kayaks. Anyone else plan to Kayak? We can bring some burgers, buns, and condiments. Do we need a grill or does park have them? We have a small charcoal grill we can bring if need be just let me know!

    August 19, 2013

    • Doug N.

I think at least 4 couples are bringing kayaks. There are grills at each table. Greg is bringing some charcoal but another bag would not hurt.

Our small boats won't qualify for this event. :(

    August 14, 2013

    • Doug N.

The event is more about a Social Gathering. Some of the attendees are bringing or renting kayaks, which might paddle together. I only suggesting larger kayaks, this is not a requirement, like I would set for a kayaking event.

      August 14, 2013

    • Doug N.

Others might go for a walk in the Strawberry Banks area.

      August 14, 2013

  • Doug N.

If you plan on paddling, please print a copy of this Portsmouth Harbor Map. http://files.meetup.com/7949242/Portsmouth_harbor.JPG

    August 13, 2013

  • Greg N.

Anyone thinking about kayaking, there is a launch right near the parking. There is a $5 launch fee to help support the park. This allows you to paddle a virtually land locked bay. The afternoon tide will set up ideal conditions.
Look forward to seeing you there.

Sorry you guys can not make it, seeing it was your idea for the Social Gathering.

      August 12, 2013

John if you would like to attend without your wife you are welcome, seeing that this event is your idea. Also we will be discussing with the group what they like to see as a policy about attending event without one's better half.

We'll bring some homemade mac n' cheese and probably some corn muffins. Do you know if they have any sort of rentals for PFDs? Looking forward to getting to know everybody!

    August 11, 2013

    • Doug N.

EMS rents PFDs and they have a store in Portsmouth. Please make sure that you or someone paddling with you knows the waters around Pierce Island. I will let Greg Nulk go into more detail as the location is his suggestion. I would think at the very least the kayaks should be 10 feet with a floatation compartment. High tide is at 3:35 PM on Aug 25. Susan and I will be bringing our kayaks.

We will either bring a Bhutanese Red Rice Salad that does not contain meat, or we will bring 7 layer salad that has bacon. Both are hearty salads. If there are lots of vegetarians then the rice salad with feta cheese on the side will be our choice.

    July 17, 2013

We hope that my husband will be able to take himself off the schedule for that day. We'll keep you posted!

Our youngest will be graduating from college that day. Sorry to miss the event.

    • Doug N.

First of all congratulation !!! Sorry the date doesn't work for you. Hopefully we will see you guys soon at an event either before or after August 25. In fact, if you would like to suggest an event for Aug 10, or Aug 11 or Aug 24, we will make it happen. Doug & Susan

Maybe a hike somewhere. Then reserve a place that has outside seating for lunch. :-)

    July 3, 2013

  • Sue

Would love to be there. Hope the date will work for us!!

    July 3, 2013

  • Greg N.

Keep us informed. Idea to throw in hat, cook out Pierce Island Portsmouth. Can reserve large picnic site with large grill and lots of tables.

  • Christine H.

How about a nice potluck after a nice little hike to get to know the other group members??

    June 29, 2013

  • Bill & Teresa R.

As long as the weather is good, one of our favorite haunts is Maudsley State Park. There are some nice spots by the river to sit and chat and there's ample opportunity to walk about. There won't be many flowers left, but that's OK. It's a beautiful spot nonetheless. Then if people are feeling up to it, we could cruise into Newburyport nearby and get some frozen yogurt or chocolate or just about anything else.

    June 29, 2013

  • Bill & Teresa R.

Seems like a good way to get to know a few new friends. Appleton Farm is a beautiful place but I don't know if it's a place to meet and socialize.

Feel free to make suggestions for the location.
