She will introduce you the world of R! This 2 hour workshop style talk will cover what R is and does and will even introduce how to load, clean nyc open data and do basic visualization in R.
To get the most benefit from the session, before you come, please consider
1. installing Rstudio before you come. You can download RStudio from http://www.rstudio.com/ide/
2. getting yourself a free github account, so you can get some R sources right away. sign up at http://www.github.com/
Vivian will explain what R is, what R can do, how R compare to other tools you might already know and use. She will also work you through NYC open data portal and explore the dataset using R. At the end of the session, everyone will be asked to do some hands-on exercise to consolidate understanding of R subsetting and plot syntax.
