Language #4: Scala

This will be the fourth meeting of the group, "7 Languages in 7 Months NYC," where we make our way through the book "Seven Languages in Seven Weeks," by Bruce Tate.

Up this month: Scala, a functional programming/OOP hybrid, and the functional programmer's way to take advantage of the Java Virtual Machine. The talk will be given by Owein Reese, a full-time Scala developer at Novus Partners.

You'll get the most out of the presentation and discussion if you read the chapter and attempt the exercises beforehand, but by all means, come to the talk whether you have done so or not.

Hope to see you there.

And: free beer and pizza.

There is currently a waiting list, but I've always gotten un-waitlisted in the past!

Really great intro to Scala. You could easily see both it's attractions and cautions.

Thanks so much to Owein for giving such a great talk! Excellent overview of the topic way outside what was covered by the book -- the slides will be a great jumping off point for me when I actually start studying Scala in earnest.

Thanks Drew. Here's the link to the prezi: http://prezi.com/nnkzx_yf8uf3/7-languages-in-7-months-4-scala/ If anyone has any questions, missed the talk and would like to hear it at a different meetup, or needs Scala help, just ask.

yeah, thanks a lot for presenting. I was very impressed with your enthusiasm for the language, it's infectious! I will take a look at the coursera scala course again.

Owein - great overview of Scala / well-packaged and really thorough: using types to implement adapter pattern / using implicit conversion instead, handling mutable state, monadic functions, hiding parameters, even what to watch out for - really helpful. Some of the finer points of Scala were really clear after your talk and thanks for presenting.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
