Saturday in the Smokies

Your votes are in. You want more WILDFLOWERS!

So we're spending our Saturday in Greenbrier. Nice! We will meet at the Porters Creek Trail at 9AM. The adventure will only begin there. Come with a sack lunch and some hiking shoes. The trail along Porters Creek is very tame and low incline, and only about 2 miles up (if we go all the way) and 2 miles back.

After that hike and wildflower extravaganza, we may search for a few more flowers along the road near the parking area for the Ramsay Cascades Trail.

Directions to our meeting spot:

To reach the Porters Creek Trail from Knoxville, go to Sevierville and turn left onto Highway 411 (Dolly Parton Parkway). Continue on 411 for 3.4 miles and turn right onto State Route 416. Stay on Route 416 for 14.5 miles (following signs to Pittman Center) until you reach the "T" intersection with Highway 321. Turn right onto 321 and take an immediate left into the Greenbrier entrance to the park.

Stay straight on the Greenbrier Road and in 4 miles you'll come to the Porters Creek trailhead parking area at the end of the road.

It would be interesting to do city scrapes after dark sometime, too.

Thanks. We'll see about how my wrist feels about being there after dark. But am glad we are getting together and the city can offer some interesting shots.

Thanks for your patience group. We will have something on the books for May. And a big outing in June! All coming after this weekend. I've been tied up working hard to launch a creative project called http://www.alivephoto.net/ You might enjoy some of the talented photographers on there.

Learned a lot on this trip. The most important was from Paul! Patients and diligence. Keep going after that one photo until you have it right. The other thing was a surprise about the operation of my camera. There are so many knobs and buttons. The camera is feature rich, it's just my mind doesn't have as many features.

Now one of my fave drives -- going there....there's gotta be a better way to come home than gps taking me thru Gatlinburg - pigeon forge! 3 hours return trip but only 1.5 going?

I'll have to hike this trail more often. This was my first time ever being there. It was great seeing everyone today

    2 · April 26, 2014

  • Paul H.

For anyone there later than 9:15am: if we have already left the trail head, you can probably catch up with us up the trail. We will go no further than Fern Branch Falls, then return to the parking lot. I will not promise any specifics on return time to parking area. There are a lot of factors in there for us nature photogs. It's going to be a fun day!

Waiting to see how I feel tonight to RSVP. I may have caught my nephews virus, not feeling great now. I have made plans to attend. Any idea how long the meetup will last?

    April 25, 2014

    • Pam R

...should say how long it will last. ...looking forward to wild flowers and Paul checking out my new camera...you can "play" with the camera if I make it to the meetup Paul.

I will be at it until approx 3pm tomorrow. But the end time is flexible with each person's schedule.

Porter's Creek is a great location. I've already been up this spring and enjoyed the bounty. I'm sorry I won't be able to join you this time. :(

Though I cannot go because I am going to my college class reunion, I will remind folks to beware of ROOTS on these trails. They are very insidious. The wildflowers may take your eye, but the roots can and will take your feet (foot). I speak from recent experience and 3 broken wrist bones. Have fun. I look forward to your pictures.

So looking forward to the trip. I've seen a lot of flowers in the last month and I have been told that Porters Creek is one of the best places to go.

I am in Maryville. Carpool any one? What time and where will we meet? Porter Creek trail head?

    April 23, 2014

    • Paul H.

That's a great idea Mark. See above details for meeting location (if not carpooling). Meeting at trailhead 9AM.

      1 · April 24, 2014

  • Paul H.

I will be announcing the location and day's schedule by tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

    We could do anything from:
    1. A hike to Grotto Falls (approx 2.5 miles r/t) or Rainbow Falls (6 miles r/t) in the lush Roaring Fork (wildflowers).
    2. A hike inside Greenbrier along the Porters Creek (couple miles... even more wildflowers).
    3. A longer hike up to Ramsay Cascades (8 miles r/t).
    4. Or the originally planned Tremont area... which would be coupled with a hike to Spruce Flatts Falls.

    Any votes?
