New Year's Day Polar Bear Bike Ride

Interested in a bike ride New Year's Day even if there is cold, snow, ice, rain or pestilence?  You never know in Nashville the weather might cooperate. The current forecast looks good.

This is a short 8 miles from Shelby Bottoms to Cornelia Fort and Riverside Village and back. Sip Cafe is supposed to be open.

It would prove how tough bicyclists are compared to people safe and warm in their cars. This is a ride for gloves, wool hats and long pants. If you wear lycra you fail.

Larry - the only bike lanes were on Riverside Drive on the way back to Shelby Bottoms. But in all honesty - the surface roads that we were on were not very busy and with the warning a car was coming, we were OK. I personally do not like roads without bike lanes, but the ones we were on the 1st were relatively slow as far as traffic was concerned. I would do it again.

Great route - some flats -- some rolling hills - awesome company.

If any of the group uses facebook - let's connect. I use mapmyride.com with my garmin and upload the route and then share it on facebook. Look for Tom Arnold and request a friend! Hope to connect with all of you!!

The route we took on the ride was great - even though there were unexpected hills, they were rolling enough that I got a pretty good workout. I do Shelby quite often and I think that from now on I'll wander off the green way and hit that hill coming out of the air park. It was a good workout!

What a great way to start the New Year! The ride today was a blast... bright blue sky, lots of sunshine and best of all, a great group of people just getting out to have some fun! Thanks to Carey and all the folks who came out and made this a super event!

Not long ago, I was talking to a woman from East Nashville who said East Nashville was not much fun to bike. Crazy, right? That trip over to Riverside Village was like ice-cream-on-your-birthday good. I want to learn more of the roads over there. Thanks, Carey!

Yep I am switching to wool Everything. I have used hand warmers , little packets you can get at Walgreens , They might feel funny in shoes. But might try anything to keep my toes warmer.

    December 31, 2013

    • Myra

Yea..might be too much in the shoe. My shoes clip in, that might irritate the pups, lol.

I road today and my feet were freezing. Any suggestions my fellow riders, since I don't own shoe covers at the moment? Fyi..I wore regular socks and hiking socks on top, toes were still cold.

Hello All. I have been riding the last 3 days in the 40 degrees. And yes ,I recommend a hat, gloves, layers of socks. All exposed skin will be cold. So maybe a face mask, I'll have to think about that one. I still want to LOOK COOL!!! LOL We are looking foward to this ride and meeting all you guys. Pedal On Shea

I'll be bringing my wife and 2 toddlers, and potentially another family, so likelihood of making 10.00 exactly is low. But will catch everyone up (using my new e-assist!) and would love to meet Carey and everybody.

Greetings. I was curious about the route from Cornelia Fort and Riverside Village. For example, I assume we start on Air Park Drive, take a right on Rosebank, then left on Porter rd. Next we'd turn right on Stratford Ave, then left on Marsden ave; Turn right on Riverside, then a quick right on Mcgavock. Or, is there another route? Thank you.
