Here is a letter / e-mail that I sent to the Mayors office,I encourage others to make our city leaders aware of the problems closing the pedestrian bridge for special events causes cyclists.
Hello Mayor Dean
First I would like to applaud your efforts to make Nashville a more bicycle friendly place .I have lived and cycled in Nashville my whole life and in the last ten years have been very proud of our towns achievements ( Music City Bike Way,Greenway System).I am writing this letter to express my concerns about the closing of the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge for special events. I have on numerous occasions(too many to list in this letter)tried to cross the river via the bridge only to be turned away by a police officer telling me the bridge was closed. Many times I cross the bridge to go across town only to find the bridge closed on the return trip ,with no notice at all. This forces me to cross the river by one of the other bridges, going into downtown traffic during rush hour. This is a very dangerous activity. When you question the officer at the bridge, you get answers like,"they granted a permit to use the bridge" and"I am not in charge of putting up a notice ".This has happened so many times now that I have been inspired to write this letter. I understand that special events want to use the bridge, but the people that use the bridge to commute to downtown at a minimum deserve advanced notice. The practice of closing the bridge during the rush hour commute places cyclists in a dangerous predicament .I do not feel that the people who issue permits to close the bridge have considered this aspect. I ask you to please take some action to correct this problem before a cyclist or pedestrian is injured or worst killed, having to navigate traffic with no bike lanes on the downtown side of the bridge.
Thank You For Your Attention
