Introduction to Moorland Navigation
A 1 day course, which will enable you to use a map and compass to navigate over open moorland.

Are you a regular hill walker, but have never learned to use a compass? If so, this is the course for you! Learn navigation skills whilst enjoying a day long walk in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District. Starts with a short overview, followed by a walk through fields and some more challenging moorland using a map and compass.

Includes:
• maps & scales • contours relief & height
• using a compass
• taking a bearing from the map & walking on it
• taking a bearing from the ground & relating to map.
• pacing & timing • finding features on the ground
• moving on steeper ground

The course starts at 10:00 am and finishing at 4:30 pm.

Saturday:
Intermediate Navigation
Gain confidence using your map and compass skills on difficult open moorland.

The 1 day “improvers” navigation course for people who already know the basics of using a map and compass. The course involves a walk of approx. 10.5 miles crossing the centre of Kinder Scout.

Trying to find your way when the mist comes down, or it is getting dark can be frightening. Planning to walk in the dark is great fun if you have the skills to navigate safely. This 3 hour evening course is designed for people who have basic map and compass navigation skills, and want to learn more advanced techniques.

Adam, what was the coffee place in Soho you mentioned? I cannot find the link you posted. I am in London twice next week and may have some time in the evening to try and find it. Thank you!

Really enjoyed the Easter weekend in the Peak District! And now that I know how to read a compass I will be looking out for more navigation.

Great outing and lovely meeting everyone. Thanks Michael for making the trip happen! For those who are competitive (or just discovered that she is competitive:) ), you may want to test your night navigation skills at the annual Rodings Rally competition in November at Epping Forest (the 57th this year I think!)

What a great time to spend Easter. Michael, thank you for all you have done to organise this and for your passion and enthusiasm. The results of my photographic obsession will follow shortly, quite a few of photos as you can imagine (as I left nothing but footprints in the Peaks and took nothing but photos!), once I have figured out how to upload them here..... Hope you all had a safe journey home. Like Adam, I feel for all of you who have to be at work today. I am on my second cup of coffee with yet another Bakewell tart and not quite ready to get up. See you all soon on our future walks. And remember: always first walk along the corridor and then up the stairs!

Mike and everyone - the festival I was talking about is this one : http://womad.co.uk/

Trust me its good, you can camp in your own tent or hire a tipi, you can also pay for extra luxury bathrooms : http://womad.co.uk/la... as for food, well its up to you on whether you want the full camping experience and cook for yourself or just a pleasurable experience of sleeping in a tent in the middle of festival grounds, and having the luxury of eating different cuisines everyday in the many good quality food stalls - highly recommended :-) cant make it to this years one :-(

All, there is a limit of 500 photos and most of the space has been taken up before I managed to get here. I will top the limit up and perhaps in a week or so, once you have had a chance to download Michael's pics, I will upload the rest of mine.

    • Adam K

Perhaps some editing would be appropriate? Alternatively perhaps the photos could be uploaded to Instagram or Flickr. There ain't no limits there.

I had a fantastic weekend with fun and friendly people and great course instructors who made everyone feel comfortable and provided a 1st class navigation course with an additional day of hiking/navigation. The weekend weather was filled with sunshine and snow-capped hills and the Peak District was a brilliant location.

Hi guys. Was great meeting up with you all. Please would you upload your photos soon. I'd love to see ’em. BTW were your Bakewell tarts delicious? For those of you back at work tomorrow I feel for you and shall give you a brief moment's thought whilst I have a well deserved lie in

A brilliant meetup! Enjoyed the company of everyone in the group. The instructors truly knew their stuff and made learning navigation both interesting and a doddle. The practical exercises were great fun in a magnificent part of the country. Feel ready to go it alone and navigate off the beaten track, even if I get "misplaced" I believe that I can relocate myself and get back on course. Can't wait to put it into practice.
