Newhaven to Seaford via the picturesque village of Alfriston

An energetic walk over the South Downs escarpment

Join us for a circular walk from Newhaven, which takes you along the South Downs escarpment with a visit to the village of Alfreston, where you can see the National Trust’s very first property, the Clergy House, acquired for the sum of £10 in 1896. The rare 14th-century thatched house is in an idyllic setting, with views across the River Cuckmere.

Clergy House - Medieval thatched Wealden hall-house and picturesque garden.

Alfriston: Clergy House, Garden & Shop. This rare 14th century Wealden 'Hall House' was the first building to be acquired by the National Trust in 1896. The thatched, timber-framed house is in an idyllic setting, with views across the River Cuckmere and surrounded by a delightful, tranquil cottage garden. On your visit; admire the first house the NT saved.
Enjoy the tranquility of our English cottage garden. Discover the chalk and sour milk floor in the hall and browse in the shop for a souvenir of you visit.

We will stop for 1.5hrs to explore the picturesque village of Alfriston were we will have time for lunch at the George Inn, and visit Clergy House.

A day full of laughs with a small friendly group. On our varied walk we enjoyed spacious hilly views and also forest trails... Highlights were the lovely pub lunch at the George Inn, paddling our weary feet in the sea and being chased out of a field by some hungry cows! Thanks everyone :D x
