Cologne Christmas market at South Bank
Just imagine… “A Christmas Market flooded in special illuminations, a spectacular Christmas tree, traditional music, numerous wooden huts filled with original handcrafts. The public enhanced and inspired by the magic winter atmosphere – listening to Christmas carols while drinking a glass of mulled wine, parents watching the children enjoy a ride on the merry-go-round …”
On the Thames between the Southbank Centre and the London Eye, Britain's newest Christmas market was first held last year. As well as wooden toys and Christmas tree decorations, the Cologne connection ensures German authenticity for everything from the stallholders to the gingerbread hearts. Most importantly, the sausages are 100 per cent German. Look for a giant sausage that marks the German Wurst Company stall. Here, almost everything comes from Germany: the sausages, the mustard, even the curry ketchup. The exception? The fresh rolls from a German bakery in London. Order the original bratwurst, a smoky schinkenwurst or the cheese-stuffed käsekrakauer.
Tip: Sausages taste best with Kölsch, a beer rarely available outside Cologne
Meeting Point and Time.
We will meet in front of the London Eye at 5.00pm for a traditional Christmas Market taking place between the London Eye and Waterloo Bridge along the River Thames.
There will be plenty of time for wandering about, look for and finding unusual Christmas presents such as amber & silver jewellery, hand crafted toys, fragile glass ornaments for your Christmas tree, hand tatted laces, wooden toys, hand-made soap, unique Christmas decoration as well as hand-made ceramics.
Other seasonal culinary specialties such as the typical German Sausage “Bratwurst” do not need an introduction, gingerbread hearts for your loved ones, roasted almonds and candies to taste the “sweet” side of life or a delicious crepe.
Food & Drinks
There will be lots of stalls selling different types of food including traditional German sausages and Kölsch beer. At 7.30pm we will meet at the Riverfront Bar, which is located under Waterloo Bridge on the Southbank for our monthly social night.
