Meeting Description: The World Without Us is a non-fiction book about what would happen to the natural and built environment if humans suddenly disappeared, written by American journalist Alan Weisman and published by St. Martin's Thomas Dunne Books. Written largely as a thought experiment, it outlines, for example, how cities and houses would deteriorate, how long man-made artifacts would last, and how remaining lifeforms would evolve. Weisman concludes that residential neighborhoods would become forests within 500 years, and that radioactive waste, bronze statues, plastics, and Mount Rushmore will be among the longest lasting evidence of human presence on Earth.
You can read more on this book in Wikipedia and Amazon.
Since we are re-instating the book club we decided to go back to our first MeetUp location, the West End. Also I took the liberty of picking the first book. Please e-mail me suggestions as soon as possible so I can make a poll and everybody can vote for our August book.
In the future we hope to have the poll up by the time the announcement of the next meeting comes out and therefore we minimize the amount of e-mails we sent out.
Hope to see you soon,
Doris
