NC Powerdown hopes to raise awareness about risks of continued reliance on fossil fuels due to climate change, the imminent peak in worldwide oil production, and the highly corruptive influence of the fossil fuel industry on democracies here and abroad. Fossil fuel access is tightly tied to capitalist growth and "development" in the past century, and so addressing low-carbon lifestyles and shifting to alternative energy sources is a highly political process. Changing our systems requires a strong, global social movement combined with economic/political incentives -- and that movement must also address equity and social justice at the same -- so this is much more than a technical issue. The events associated with this meet-up are intended as a resource to members as they gain knowledge about sustainability, convert to lower carbon lifestyles and engage with policy to create a common future in which future generations may thrive. Contact Sandy Smith-Nonini at yikes.contact @ gmail.com for more information, or to suggest a new meet-up if you wish to organize one.
