Meet the author in a family friendly program for kids of all ages. Bring your “Blanky and your Boo Bear" (bringing of your favorite stuffed animal, pajamas, and blankets is encouraged) Come hear a master storyteller tell her favorite stories and join us for refreshments.
Carmen Deedy is an award-winning storyteller who has been sharing tales and writing books for children for more than two decades. Her work as a storyteller has taken her all over North America speaking to adults and children alike. Among other places, she has spoken at the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Disney Institute, and the Kennedy Space Center. She is a recurrent featured teller at the International Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Born in Havana, Cuba, she and her family migrated to the United States in 1964 after the Cuban Revolution, settling down in Decatur, Georgia. Since then, she has written ten children’s books in English and two in Spanish, received numerous awards including the Pura Belpre Honor, the Odyssey Honor, and the Christopher Award. She has also spoken numerous times on the NPR radio program All Things Considered. These appearances were compiled into the audiobook Growing up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia, which won awards from Publishers Weekly and the Parents’ Choice Foundation. She lives near Atlanta, Ga. with her singer storyteller husband John McCutcheon.
