MLK Day of Service: Help families with their new computers

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Joe Burgess, Teaming for Technology (T4T), United Way of the Greater Triangle, is having several families at United Way of the Greater Triangle on January 18. They are low income families that will be receiving computers. He needs help teaching them how to use, build and maintain them. He also needs help carrying the computers out to peoples' cars. Besides workers, we need a couple of documentation/PR people to record the activities and perhaps write a news release.

Joe needs lots of help training. In addition to the training, he needs help carrying equipment, cleaning up and needs a teen or young adult to help watch the very young children of the event's participants (he'll have a daycare room set up). If any volunteers want to bring kids, that's fine.

Joe is asking volunteers to arrive at noon to help setup and for orientation. Volunteer participation will last from 12pm - 5:30pm. The training itself is 2-5 pm.

If you can make it, please email Joe at t4t at unitedwaytriangle.org.

I just joined this meetup today. I'm interested in the MLK day of service project with T4T, although it might be too late to help out. Does anyone know whether volunteers are still needed?

I'm impressed with how many folks plan to help out! Joe Burgess says, "I added a 2nd project to accommodate everybody. The 2nd project is a Spray & Shine where we extra volunteers can clean keyboards, mice & computers."

What a wonderful turn out for this event. I had a great time meeting new people, helping where ever needed and learning more about what the United Way is doing for the local community. It was a great experience being part of a new program watching people walk away with newly built computers and receiving education to help them out. I look forward to helping out at future events and encourage others to also participate.

I was very pleased at the turn out today for this program. My boys enjoyed helping. I actually had to make them stop so we could get home! We were there until around four oclock and people were still working hard! JOE awesome thing you all are doing! I almost did not come because in my mind a DAY OFF but I am so extremely glad we came. We will be there for anything you all do as long as we can get there. Thanks again for what you all are doing for families. I look forward to the next event!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking for a service project for MLK Day and this one was really good. I met some nice people there and everyone worked hard to remove the hard drives (and dust!) from hundreds of computers, clean computer peripherals, etc. (The hard drives were to be re-imaged and reused in the computers.) My group worked outside, as the weather was beautiful. The United Way facility is very clean. It's great knowing that this project will make computers accessible to many families and help to narrow the digital divide.
