Backscatter, Sterling Zumbrunn and Preparing for Serendipity

At this meeting, Backscatter will be showing off the latest and greatest in entry level and advanced underwater photography equipment followed by a awe inspiring and thought provoking presentation by Sterling Zumbrunn.

Sterling Zumbrunn has been shooting underwater for over a decade, traveling the world as Conservation International’s Director of Photography, and now as one of the lead educators for Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo in Monterey. From our own waters in California, to the reefs of Indonesia, to the blue water aggregations of Mexico, he’s had the opportunity to photograph some of our ocean’s most incredible environments.

In this talk, Sterling will walk you through some of his most popular images, explaining how being in the right place at the right time is only part of the story, and how proper gear, good preparation, and mental readiness can help you capitalize on incredible moments when they happen.

You can’t always create magic in the ocean - most of the time, it just happens on its own. But you can be prepared to create the best images possible when you do find yourself in those special situations. Sterling will offer some simple tips to help ready yourself for your next memorable encounter.

Sterlings presentation was fantastic. His images were extraordinary, those underwater, terrestrial and especially the split-shots. What an inspiration about where I might hope to one day take my own photography.

What a great presenter! What beautiful above/underwater photos! It is amazing what all someone can take with a point and shoot camera. I had a hard time seeing the difference between those shots and the super duper expensive Canon setup ones. For a beginner, the point and shoot cameras (like GoPro or SeaLife) really do take some outstanding photos! A good eye helps too. The photo equipment he brought was really varied and great to look at and handle. He answered everyone's questions and stayed late to do so.
Very humble guy. A really great photographer! Definitely, do not want to miss him when he presents again next year!
