Join Cheryl and I for an easy paddle around Newport Lake. We will glide around the wooded shores and several small islands with narrow passages that the park calls a water trail. A surprisingly natural setting for park that is surrounded by a city. We've seen a variety of birds here.
Launch time 10:30 am
Expect about 2 hours on the water. After the paddle we will be having lunch at a local restaurant. Hank lives nearby and can make some suggestions.
Note: Unless you are familiar with this park, navigating to the launch site will be tricky. Newport Drive is one way traffic along the lake. I have added maps under MORE --> FILES marked with what I think will be the best route from the north and south.
Also: There are no restroom facilities at the launch site. The closest restroom will be on your way in. At the intersection of Shields Road and Newport Drive rather than turning north on Newport turn south. The road stops in a parking area. The rest rooms are about 200 feet down the walkway. There is a "P" shown on the map.
Reminder.....PLEASE UPDATE your rsvp if needed. -Ken
Looks like a nice paddle sorry to have missed it. We just returned from vacation

Hank, I couldn't find your post. You said there were 2 phone #'s? You went to Lake Newport but couldn't find the other paddlers? Tell us what happened.

Sorry I missed the paddle with no call-off. I wound up at the vet's office all morning with a sick dog. At least it was during office hours. Emergencies (human or dog) always seem to happen during off hours.

This was my first experience with this group. I felt very supported with having been welcomed from the moment I signed up, the leaders help in giving directions, the groups helping of one another with equiptment, launching, and upon returning. I so enjoyed learning about the venue, its currents, flowers, trees, fish, turtles, birds from all who attended. I look forward to my next opportunity to attend.

from Ken...I always enjoy a paddle around this small lake and upstream in Mill Creek which feeds it. Always something to look at and critters to watch. Sorry that 5 paddlers decided not to come (or couldn't find the launch site). Four paddlers, Ken, Cheryl, Bernie and first time member Linda P from PA, attended. It was cloudy and we were able to stay out of the breeze by traveling the small passages. With only a hint of drizzle, no raingear was needed. Will do this again in another season.

Bernie when I first called you, you answered and hung up, I thought you dropped your phone in the water! Thanks for calling me back though. Glad the paddle enjoyable. I understand only 4 showed up, I am going to assume the weather looked bad for the other 4, it did for me.

August 11
from Ken...Weather? Overcast but dry and a bit breezy here near Louisvlle. Your guess is as good as mine. Cheryl and I will be at the launch about 10am. Bring a rain jacket just in case. We do not paddle if a storm comes up.
August 11
from Ken...Yes Bernie, the weather will be either on your right side or your left side.

Be sure to snap photos of the wildlife! I've had to change my rsvp. But you all have fun!!
August 10
from Ken...Hank, since we don't know how many might go to lunch, I suggest we get a head count at the launch site before we paddle and you can call then.
August 10
from Ken... I am not sure how many kayaks they have for rent or their availbility. I suggest you call the Metroparks office at [masked] for the most current information. If you find out anything please post back.
August 7
Does anyone know the price to rent?
August 6
Thanks for uploading the maps of this paddle plus other informative images regarding Mill Creek Park and its lakes. I am sure the members will print out and use for future times.
August 3
That would be great Sam, Thanks!
July 30
That's kind of you Doug. I'm no where near Columbiana. I've no problem getting to events. : ) I was asking if anyone wanted to "share a ride" with me in a double kayak, canoe, etc. I love kayaking, but I probably won't come to an actual kayaking event unless/until I find a kayak being sold very inexpensively, given away or someone able to share theirs. I guess that's why I joined for now...to put my mind toward finding one of those. I don't have one of my own.
July 16
Does anyone have room to share a ride? I only have an inflatable raft. Probably too slow to keep up!
July 15
I just paddled the entire lake. Water ranges from ripples, flat and snagnant. Several islands. I was hoping to discover any indication of caves but are the East And West Channel, IslandsTrails and West Newport Trail.
July 9
from Ken....I'm not sure if you are addressing me but the boat launch is on the east side of Lake Newport on East Newport Drive. Glad to see you folks are interested. With 8 weeks to go I thought I would wait to fill in the fine details but feel free to ask anyway.
June 13
Then all of us can go 2 the boat lauch as a group. I live on the border of Mill Creek Park.
