Chili Cook-Off & Apple Pie Bake-Off, Potluck and Hike

The Chili cook-off and Apple Pie bake-off event is back!!!!  This event will take place at the Octagon Shelter in the wonderful CVNP. The shelter will be opened at 1:00 where we will begin to set up tables, drop off food, and start the wood burning in the two fireplaces that are provided to warm up the shelter.

The hike will begin at 2:00 pm and is approximately 4 miles in distance.  We will be hiking the scenic Pine Grove and Ledges Trails (see below for maps of the trails).  Terrain is mild to moderate with a few elevation changes.  Dinner will start around 4:00 pm.  Facility closes at 6:00 pm.

When we return from our hike we will taste and sample all the entries and vote on our favorites.  After the winners are announced and cash prizes are awarded, we can play cards or board games and stay at the facility until it closes at 6 pm. See below for more details.

Alcohol is permitted in cans, bottles, and cups and must be contained inside the reserved building = no one is permitted to walk outside the facility with alcohol in their hands.

Feel free to bring a dish to share - some suggestions being - salad, vegetables, fruit, crackers, bread, apple cider &/or hot chocolate in a crockpot, bottled water, etc.

What to bring and what is needed:

* Please list what you will bring when you RSVP

1.  Which category you intend to enter - chili, pie or BOTH!

2.  Bring your own extension cord if you need electricity

3.  I need people to sign up for drinks - cider/pop/water/coffee

4.  I need people to sign up for hot & cold cups/bowls/                           plates/napkins/utensils for 50/100

5.  Board and card games

6.  I need someone to volunteer to be the hike leader

I will be covering the initial cost of $110 for reserving the lodge as well as providing cash prizes to the winners of each category for a total of 6 winners.   Cash prizes will be $20 for each first place winner and $15 for each second place winner, and $10 for each third place winner.

The total cost of this event will be $200.  To help make this event possible I am asking each person to donate $8 when they arrive, cost to be decided and adjusted depending on the number of people who sign up

Thanks everyone for a great time yesterday! Couldn't ask for a better group of friends and a perfect day of sunshine and warmth blessing us this early day of March!!! And thank you Wade for you help in setting up and volunteering to be our hike leader. Great job as always! And thank you Bill for being our cashier and to anyone else who pitched in to set up or clean up. This event could not have taken place without the many helping hands that were offered and much appreciated. A summary of our winners for the chili context: 1st place - John with his amazing kilbasi chili stew.
2nd place - Tom with his lean turkey chili
3rd place - Miki with her famous beer chili

And the winners for the apple pies, which by the way, were all amazing. I could hardly decide which to pick and I am an apple pie lover!

    1st place - Kathy M N
    2nd place - Christina
    3rd place - Linda

Anyone interested in adding a little distance to this hike and doing more like 6 miles instead of 4? The weather looks great this weekend.
