Canoe / Kayak the Upper Cuyahoga River

  • Oct 12, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Distance : about 10 Miles

Rating: Moderate (about 3 - 4 hours)

Description: A nice local river trip.

Directions: Camp Hi Canoe Livery, Inc., 12274 Abbott Rd., Hiram, OH 44234
http://www.camphicanoe.com/

Price: About $27/person for the canoe / kayak rental (if we have more than 10 people, we get a  discount).  Feel free, however, to bring your own if you have one.  It is 1/2 the price if you bring your own boat.  Please do not call Camp Hi for a reservation.  They have plenty of boats and they are already expecting us.

This is a family friendly river trip.  Moderate paced water, a couple of nice swimming spots, usually lots of turtles and birds. The leaves should be gorgeous. The weather prediction is low to mid-70's. Weather should be pleasant but you may want to bring a change of shoes and clothes for your return trip home if you get wet and don't want to return home wet.

Bring your lunch and something to share if you want. A picnic on the water sounds like fun!

Call me at[masked] if you have concerns. Thanks.

Just a heads up for Barb (see message below): Camp Hi's website states that personal kayaks have to be 9 1/2 feet at a minimum. The response given to her is wrong. I also have an 8 1/2 foot kayak (fits inside my hatchback!), but have to rent at Camp Hi. Their haulers just won't work for the shorter crafts. Also, I noted three different groups planning to go tomorrow, with huge totals. Someone might want to call and see just how many kayaks they will have available, since non-group members might also be planning this as a last-chance outing.

I'm not sure if I'm going tomorrow, so I'll put off an RSVP. But, to the rest of you, have a great time! I love this stretch of river!

I'm so depressed - I took them at their word on the website /-; I've done two trips there this summer, renting when I could have gone half price with my own gear. Thanks so much for the info! Unfortunately, I'm not going to make this trip. I'm probably done for the season - I cleaned out my car interior yesterday from all the debris my 8 1/2 footer left in there. Too lazy to do it again!

Em, They were willing to make special arrangements for us. Normally, it is 9'. Call ahead of time before you go next time to request transport for your smaller kayak. They're great so I'm sure they can accommodate you! Sorry that you couldn't make it.

I really wanted to come today, but my dog got sick last night, and I had to get her to the vet today...she's going to be ok....she ate something that made her sick...hopefully, i can make the next outing.

Rainbowmaker, Sorry about your dog. Hope to see you on another activity.

Thanks to those who uploaded photos! I really guess I wasn't meant to make this trip - illness that affected my balance and a car that would not start (sick alternator!)... I hope this group schedules this trip again!

Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed the weather, water, scenery, and camaraderie. It was an amazing day with perfect weather.

great fun and when the leaves were falling across the river as you paddled down it, the view was wonderful.

Hi Em, I called Camphi yesterday; they said they can carry the smaller kayaks. I was really looking forward to going today but I had to cancel since I injured my wrist at the gym earlier this week.

Wow - They need to change their website info then and save me some money! Thanks for double checking! And, I'm very sorry about your wrist. I'm also going to miss this trip - pure laziness. I did my fall car clean-out yesterday, thinking I was done paddling and tracking sand and muck into my car! As they say in sports, "Wait till next year!"

I spoke to Camp Hi and they will offer the 7 mile trip we usually do for anyone who wants a shorter paddle. Weather looks great for Saturday!

    October 10, 2013

    • Wendy

Due to time constraints, some people had asked about the shorter trip.

      October 11, 2013

    • Thérèse

Thanks Wendy. Camp Hi will extended the discounted rate if you wish to do the shorter trip.

I will be coming with my husband or a friend if my husband has to work. We will be bringing our own kayaks. Do we need to pack a lunch or can we buy it somewhere over there? Really looking forward to going!

    October 11, 2013

    • Thérèse

Rainbowmaker, You might want to pack a lunch as we will be on the water during lunch time and it's a few hours before we are finished. Look forward to see you there.

Do you know if there is a size restriction for Camp Hi transporting my kayak? I have an 8 1/2' (?) and some places won't transport the smaller kayaks.

    October 11, 2013

    • Thérèse

Barb, They will be able to accommodate your kayak. Thanks for letting me know.
