Canoe / Kayak the Upper Cuyahoga River

Distance : about 7 Miles

Rating: Moderate (about 2-3 hours)

Description: A nice local river trip.

Please arrive 30 to 40 minutes early to sign in and pay!!

Directions: Camp Hi Canoe Livery, Inc., 12274 Abbott Rd., Hiram, OH 44234
http://www.camphicanoe.com/

Price: About $20/person for the canoe / kayak rental (if we have more than 10 people, we get a $2 / person discount).  Feel free, however, to bring your own if you have one.  It is 1/2 the price if you bring your own boat.  Please do not call Camp Hi for a reservation.  They have plenty of boats and they are already expecting us.

This is a family friendly river trip.  Moderate paced water, a couple of nice swimming spots, usually lots of turtles and birds.  Long enough to be an adventure, but not so long that it gets boring.

If you want, we'll meet at Blazin Bills afterwards (12891 Main Market Road, Burton, OH[masked] (440)[masked]) for refreshments.

Had a blast!!! We were in a group of 7 and even though there were some delays in signing in and waiting for our boats, the actual trip made it all worth it. We spent most of the trip laughing at all that was going on and saying hi to everyone we met. Thanks for such a great meetup. What a gorgeous river and day.

You had to tell them u were with the hiking group for the discount fee of $20 there were an unusual number of late sign ups not to mention all the other people of large numbers making the situation difficult unfortunately. Was all good though once in the water, thanks for all your efforts Wendy!

The weather was perfect. Unfortunately, I cannot tell the same about the organization of the trip. People mostly did not know each other or who belongs to the group because there were hundreds of other people around. Boats (canoes, kayaks) were not pre-booked so we spend almost 2 hours in line under the sun. Kayak costs 27$ not 20$ or 18$. Well, it was good to be outside in good weather, even the river was muddy with many logs that was not removed after flood.

I agree about the crowds and think much of the delay could have been avoided if the livery had designated one person to hand out waivers and collect money and completed waivers all along the line. In defense of the host, she did pre-book the trip. The livery had all our names. She also provided her cell phone number to assist us. Short of using a bull-horn, there was really no easy way to gather the group. On second thought, the bus could have been specifically designated for the group - a temporary sign like on city buses. We could have been instructed to gather at a particular bus. As to the river, they did clear places that were totally blocked. Part of the adventure of paddling is maneuvering. Just my thoughts.

Jim and I were ahead of the pack so didn't do much socializing, but the day was absolutely perfect! I uploaded some pics - missed out on great shots of two herons, though. Hope the newbies fell in love with paddling!

I couldn't make it today. I'm going to get on the water first thing tomorrow morning though (they open at 9:00am, so I'll be there at 8:50am) should anyone want to join me. If anyone is interested and wants me to wait for you, then give me a call [masked]) or email me at brianmelkowits@ gmail.com.

Could not find anyone who wanted to canoe with me. Have fun, it looks like a great day with the clear skies and the water should be high.

I am so glad to see another newbie coming! I have never kayaked before, and I resolved last winter that this would be the summer I remedied that. I'm looking forward to Sunday!

Thanks Wendy... I do not have any gears... Is there a rental nearby for all things?... Should I come early for that?

Camp Hi rents the boat, life jacket and paddle for the $20. I suggest sunscreen, bug spray and whatever you may want to snack on and drink.

If you have your own boat, they transport it up river to the starting point. We finish the 7 miles at Camp Hi the pull out site.

So they'll charge $10 to do livery service?
