Here is a message from Jenny our naturalist regarding some of the animals we saw:

Thanks to all who came out for a great hike through the southern part of Hinckley Reservation yesterday! I just wanted to update you on a few things we saw... the snake I was sure was a brown snake? Well, after I looked at the photos on the camera closer and talked to a couple of the other naturalists, it is a garter snake, sorry! Coloration is so variable this one was just particularly brown and lacked the striping on the back. Since coloration is so variable, the trick is to look at the rows of scales nearest the belly - garters will have about 2-3 rows of light colored scales. Also, there was a question about the mouth structure of daddy longlegs - mouthparts are similar to that of a crab. I think I mentioned yesterday, but they have no fangs and no venom and they are not true spiders.

Thank again for a great hike and I look forward to seeing you next month!

    Happy Trails,
    Jenny
