13 Mile Fall Hike

This hike is for the hardy!!  13 Miles!

We will start at the Red Lock Trailhead.  From there we will take the Valley Bridle north 2.6 miles, make the turn south and continue on the Buckeye Trail for 2.9 miles to Snowville Road.  Then we will cross Snowville and continue on the Buckeye Trail for 4.3 miles to Blue Hen Falls.  At Blue Hen we will follow the creek to Buttermilk Falls and continue west to Boston about 1.2 miles.  In Boston we will take the Tow Path back to Red Lock for 2 miles.

Description:  This is a DIFFICULT hike!!! There are many hills on the Valley and Buckeye Trails.  We will travel though many diverse and beautiful terrains and the leaves should be at peak color.  Yes, there are several stream crossings. Bring your camera.

Only the last 2 miles are flat.

Sturdy shoes, water, and snacks are highly recommended.

The pace will be moderate, about 3 miles per hour.  We will take short breaks if needed.

Hiking time 4-5 hours.

After the hike we can get a well deserved drink and lunch at Pat Dees in Northfield.

As always, hike at your own risk.

Challenging , beautiful and stimulating. One of the great joys of hiking has been meeting Wendy. No matter what has happened in my life--being around Wendy always makes me smile. I appreciate your effort. having been away for a few weeks; Your efforts are always heartfelt and appreciated. The same for Tom, Dawn, Ed, Wade, Donna and anyone else I missed. Thanks to all of you that selflessly plan these hikes and keep track of us. We congregate together at other meetups because of the lives we share on the trail and the challenges we face together. Beautiful day, great scenery, and as always a good group of people to hike with, my knee slowed me down but hopefully on the next hike it will be less of an impediment.

Tom, your comment made me giggle, but I see you you have not RSVP'd. Are you trading in your red cap for a wussy cap?

13+ miles is far and there are a lot of hills both up and down with flat stretches inbeween. All I ask is to never get more 3-8 minutes and have in site the hiker ahead of you

Most of all this is a FUN hike with friends!!!

I'm very excited about the great number of hikers for Sat. Just a few notes: Red Lock parking lot is small, parking on Highland is ok. This hike will be fast paced but not "fitness" hike about 3++ miles per hour. We will have stops to regroup and take pics every few miles. My hope after each stop we can shift around and talk to and meet different people. The stops will be by stream crossings or other places if beauty....we are going to enjoy this last gorgeous day of fall. If anyone wants to run ahead and not be part of this group let me know that you know the trail and may see you at red lock

Some info. about this hike. You should bring at least one bottle of water and two preferably. This hike may take an hour or two longer for some. You will need to bring some snacks or a sandwich in case you run low on carbs. There are no restrooms the first 11 miles, only the woods so plan accordingly. We may get somewhat seperated over the course of the hike, so please download the map below from the park website so you have a ref. Just some helpful thoughts.

Seeing how Robin "G" has thrown down the "Red Hat Gauntlet", I must answer this and defend my Honor!! Besides, someone must go to carry the litter with the bewildered fallen of this trek...LOL!!
