On behalf of Chad I would like to invite you all to participate in a poll to see the level of interest in a Backpacking for Beginners series of workshops, hikes and trips. The poll is located at: http://www.meetup.com/NEOHiking/polls/
Here is the information on Chad's idea:
"Backpacking for Beginners"
"This series of meet-ups is for people who are interested in taking hiking to the next level.
Have you always thought you might like to backpack, but didn’t know where or how to start, this series of meet-ups might just be the ticket. Or, Lets say you have experience and the gear, but haven’t been on a trip in some time and your gear’s technology predates the I Phone, You too may enjoy this series of meet-ups. Anyone can attend the series to gain knowledge without the commitment to do the over night stays.
As we hike, learn, and prepare together, we will plan several backpacking trips. Our 1st backpacking trip will be an easy low mileage overnight stay within a 45-minute drive of the greater Cleveland area.
The 2nd trip will be low mileage again and close to home, however, it will be for 2 nights. By the end of the summer we hope to plan a longer and more challenging fall trip to the Allegany national forest.
I have enlisted the expertise of a long-time acquaintance of mine, Chris Newman, formerly of Newman Outfitters, a longtime outdoors shop here in northern Ohio. Chris in now with Geiger’s and has agreed to offer his 30 plus years of outdoor knowledge, experience and resources to our group. The objective of these meet-ups is focused around learning the needed information to participate safely and successfully in the sport of backpacking.
We hope to schedule the “get-togethers” to precede or follow a hike. "
