You're most welcome, Virginia. It was a treat seeing so many paddlers from OH, both NEOK and others.

For our event next June, recall we're thinking of movies/food/camping/music along the river in the evening, and a day-time paddle. Is it reasonable for your group to do the evening stuff on Friday, or is Saturday evening better? One way or the other, we'll start the float somewhat later in the a.m, in response to popular demand.

We'd appreciate some input on a mini-sojourn so it works best for everyone...

Anyone reading this is invited to comment.

Hugh, please express our thanks to all the organizers of this event. It was very well-organized, and all the volunteers were so helpful! We appreciated the spotters by the large rock in the river, and the young guys who helped us put out! We look forward to your event in June!

WOW! What a fantastic day on the Shenango River! The river had plenty of water and a swift current. This made for a wonderful paddle with several different challenges : ). We had a group of
5-star paddlers today, who made the event super! Thanks to all paddlers & guests who turned out for this, and special thanks to Hugh Clark for inviting us to a superb event that we all enjoyed very much! Thanks also to Ken & Cheryl for recommending this event.

So, next year, our next event will have either a later general start or an extended time for the shuttle. While we haven't fleshed out the plan completely, it might look like this; camping in the meadow below the dam, near the launch area. A commercially operated movie set-up, showing canoe/kayak documentaries (like paddling the Congo River!), a pig roast dinner, live music, bonfire, and maybe fireworks.

Got to not keeping hitting "return" for a paragraph...next morning, not too early, a float preceded by some professionally done on water safety/skills stuff...then again something at the end of the float--lunch, etc. You can camp with us, stay at a local motel, or just show up in the not too early a.m. for the float...likely date is June 27-28; at least on that weekend.

Virginia, I tried to make up for the lost time with you all on Saturday. My husband and I did the paddle on Sunday (same section of the Shenango river as you did). It was really great! Took us about 2hrs 45min. We saw an osprey, an eagle and several great blue herons. Beautiful scenery.

Me too Ginger, I could not get there that early Sat am so didn't even try. I did make it to Sharon for the festival. When you have to drive far...could we start at 9 or 10 even next time?

Thanks to Virginia, Hank, and all the paddlers in our group for a fun paddle. The Upper Shenago River presented new challeges with every twist and turn in our 8.5 mile trip. The sunny blue skies made for a perfect day a long with the 140 paddlers involved. Thanks also to Hugh Clark and the people putting on this event.

Directions from Pymatuning Park to Riverside Park: Go back to the park entrance where you turned into the park. That is Hwy 322. Turn left toward Jamestown, about 2 miles east. At the only traffic light in Jamestown, go straight (322 turns north at the light) on Hwy 58 to Greenville. As you drive through Thiel College, you'll pass the college chapel on the right (it looks like a small church). Two streets further, see a blue highway department sign for Riverside Park. Turn right there, go about 3 blocks to the park entrance. Some men from the Jamestown Lions will be there to direct you to parking and the shuttle. Drive time from park to park is about 10-15 minutes.

Erin, thanks for the info. Hopefully, we will not experience the sort of high water you ran into last spring. Ken & Cheryl did the trip around this same time last year, and had no complaints ... Maybe we'll see you out there!

    Hi everyone,
Not sure whether I'll make it or not, but thought I'd mention that I did this section last spring. There was a release that day & there had been some rain, so I think the water was up a little higher than it probably will be this Saturday. At that time I thought it was a advanced beginner trip, as the current was a bit swift and there were downed trees (a.k.a. strainers) in inopportune places. A beginner who couldn't control a boat in moving water could easily have gone under a number of strainers. In fact, about 10 minutes after we put in we ran into a group in a canoe who had done just that. Fortunately for them, everyone emerged wet, a tad scared, but unharmed. We found their cell phones in a plastic container a couple of miles downstream & delivered it to the ranger's office. I hope they thought to look there!

It is possible the strainers have been removed, but be on the lookout just in case.

If I'm not there, have a great day!

I'm thinking to meet at Riverside Park by the shuttle by 9:00 a.m.
I've asked Hugh for directions from Pymatuning to Riverside, so hope to post those.

The RSVP wouldn't let me select +3. I'm bringing 4 paddlers including myself.

This is a VERY nice river to paddle. Last weekend the current was rather quick. Made things move along quite nicely.

Is anyone interested in meeting up & driving out together Saturday morning?
