Anyone have suggestions for a good all purpose kayak that is as inexpensive as possible? Would be used mainly at Portage Lakes and local rivers.

    April 21, 2014

Search Craigslist. I found my 14' Wilderness Systems Tsunami there for 500 bucks

used used USED. don't buy a boat new unless there's no other way to find it. most people who sell kayaks are moving or just got out of the hobby, so the boats are in great condition. just keep in mind, longer/skinnier boats go faster, and the more maneuverable the less stable, and vice versa. most rec/flatwater boats have some form of storage space as well

    April 25, 2014

    • Rod B.

Need a license on the thing if your from ohio. There I a license bureau in Akron. Not far from P. LAKES. If your fast you could get it and still meet up with the group.

Hi! So the Lahm Drive address is where I want to go, correct? Also, what time should I plan to be there to park and get my kayak to the meet? Thanks:-)

    April 25, 2014

    • Robert B.

If you are going to the state park boat ramp you do NOT want to down Lahm Dr. You want state Park Dr which is directly across from Dietzes off 619. Drive all the way to the end of the road it runs directly into the park See link: http://mapq.st/1pzUeE...

As a side not, if anybody is interested, I am a certified vessel examiner with the United states Power Squadrons and I can perform a courtesy vessel safety check on your vessel and issue you a decal. I will be available before and after the paddle. Just make sure to bring with you the original registration, of which you are required to carry on your vessel.

If this wasn't a Saturday I could go... damn work :)

    April 25, 2014

Work yes I know the word. I guess it does beat starvation and dying from hypothermia and over exposure!

      1 · April 25, 2014

Someone had mentioned that they need a watercraft registration. There is a watercraft office in that area on Arlington road, not too far from the boat ramp. They are open from 8:00am until 1:00pm Saturday and they offer the alternative registration decal. ODNR: 2756 S. Arlington Road Akron, OH 44312. You could easily stop there on your way.

Hello, I'm hoping to join this weekend. I just need to wait to see if my boyfriend can go. He has the kayak rack. Just wondering, are we meeting at the ramp that is listed at the address above? And what do you typically do for lunch? Thanks! I'm looking forward to meeting you all! Torie

    April 23, 2014

    • Virginia

Bernie mentioned a grassy area there for the put-in. He's also placing a NEOK sign to guide you. Bernie, do you know if the Upper Deck is open for lunch yet? It's right on the lake ... We also break for snacks on the water, so bring something to munch on!

      April 23, 2014

    • Robert B.

There are several restaurants along the lake all are open for lunch. Upper Deck, Howies, Dietzes, On tap (Harbor Inn) Dannos also has food as well. Nicoletti’s Park Place should also be open, they have phenomenal food. That was the old Hook line and drinkers, next to On Tap.

While I was glad to know about this service at Portage Lakes and could think about using this sometime as a chance to paddle a different kind of boat, the multitude of comments here (and in my e-mail) strike me as being a bit self promotional. I think conversations between MFK and potential customers need to be done via personal e-mail / phone and not on this meetup group. I don't see any problem with MFK bring customers to our event as long as it does not crowd out regular members. We will welcome everyone. This is a personal comment and not that of the organizers.

    1 · April 23, 2014

    • Cynthia

I really am very sorry. It never occurred to me that each comment was popping up in notifications of everyone. In Michael's defense there were several people that wanted to participate that don't own kayaks and were being told that there weren't any rentals available on Portage Lakes. He asked people to contact him by email, so I think that he was trying to do the right thing. This is my last comment. I hope everyone has a great day Saturday.

      2 · April 23, 2014

    • Rod B.

People wanted to know about kayak rental. They found out. That works for me. Don't ask won't know. I say thanks MFK for letting people know they do have that option .

      3 · April 23, 2014

  • Dan

I won't be making it this time, to cold. I will have to meetup when it finally warms up.

    April 23, 2014

  • Justin C.

Never been there. Is there a shuttle that takes us out or do we have to arrange a ride back to our cars.

    April 22, 2014

    • Michael B

Justin, you paddle in on direction and then head back where you came from, so no shuttle necessary. There's plenty of shoreline to explore so it doesn't even seem like you're doubling back.

      April 22, 2014

  • Teri

Hi! I'd like to join your group on April 26th. I have my own kayak, but I'm trying to get my ODNR tag and the website will not come up. Any suggestions?

    1 · April 12, 2014

    • Jim B.

I got mine at the auto license branch. They said the rules are changed and all you need now is their sticker.

      April 21, 2014

    • Michael B

Teri, in Ohio if you're paddling in the daytime and not on Lake Erie or the Ohio River, the only safety equipment you are required to have is a PFD. At night you need a white flashlight to signal other boats of your presence. On Lake Erie you need a whistle/signaling device. A bilge pump and sponge is helpful, but not required.

      1 · April 22, 2014

  • Virginia

Sorry, but there are no rentals available for this outing. There will be on some of our future outings, though. No shuttle is necessary. We will end where we started!

Her case is also different than mine as she permanently lives there and is crossing the border for a day

      April 15, 2014

    • Jim S

Ohio requires that your boat be registered in the state you live in, IF that state has required registration. If your home state has no registration, then you are not required to do anything (unless you use the boat extensively in Ohio). I suggest to carry your driver's license with you to prove out of state residence if needed.

      April 16, 2014

Try to get back from vacation in time for the spring thing.

    April 14, 2014

For new people like me (and Cindy, below) who want to try kayaking, but do not yet want to invest in a kayak, are there rentals there?

Let me know Peggy what you find for rental. .. maybe we can meet there.

I looked up Portage Lake rentals and it seems that they only have a company that provides tours of the lakes on rented kayaks.
