Shenango River - Paddlefest 2012

  • September 30, 2012 · 8:45 AM

Shenango River from Pymatuning Dam to Riverside Park in Greenville PA

9 miles,   class I (easy),   no portages,  trip time about 3 to 3-1/2 hours

Cost is $10 donation to Shenango River Watchers for shuttle.

Included is a free lunch (hot dogs,  chips,  drink) served from 12 to 2 pm

This is a  scenic stretch of river with several miles flowing along wooded banks with few signs of humanity.

There will be a portablerestroom located about half way down river.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch sitewill be at the spillway parking area at the bottom of the dam. There are restrooms here.  Plan to have your boat unloaded by 9:00 am.  We will need to drive our vehicles about 8 miles (20 minutes) south to Riverside Park in Greenville.  We will board the shuttle bus and they will take us back upstream to the dam.  The last bus leaves about 10 am so we will have to watch our time.  You will need to sign a waiver.  We can launch anytime after we get back to the dam as there is no set schedule after that.

Directions to launch:  Enter Park at entrance off of State Route 322.  Follow road to the right that takes you over the dam.  Cross the dam and take the road to the right which will take you to the spillway parking area.  There will be lots of cars, boats & people here.  Look for a Meetup/NEOK  sign to find our group.

River level:   I was told that the water level was was low but steady  (flow is dam controlled).  Paddlers have been using river all summer. Last June when we did this trip the authorities opened the dam gates for 5 hours which raised the water 5 inches and that made for a lively current.  Pymatuning Reservoir is now low so they may not be inclined to release water.

Boat Registration in Pennsylvania:  As long as you have a valid Ohio watercraft tag on your boat you are good in PA.  There is some confusion about this in PA because canoes and kayaks in PA are not registered but must puchase launch permits.

Food:  Bring a sandwhich, snacks, drinks for the paddle.  Cheryl and I are not fond of hot dogs.  We may opt to have a late lunch somewhere at a local eatery.  Join us if you can.

Clothing:  This is a rain or shine event.  Dress for the weather and bring  rain gear or poncho if it looks  even remotely like it might rain.  This is far enough away from home that the weather could be different.

This is a big event!  Expect to see a lot a lot of boats at the launch site.  Last  June,  156 boats launched over a two hour period.  Most boats will probably be launched by the time we get in the water so I expect the river will not be overly crowded.

Contact phone number:    [masked]  (this will be active on Sunday morning from 6 am to 10 am)

I got the last shuttle, they waited till every one got down there, but by then most of the paddlers had started. Some people were already leaving when I finished but they still had hotdogs and cookies.

I just joined this meet-up after speaking to Bernie and Ken on the shuttle bus. I agree that this was a really nice trip.

I already added to my no show do to weather report, wasn't taking the chance to drive up and sit it the rain all day in 54 degree weather. Honestly someone should fire all the weather people and tear down that worthless doppler radar!

I missed a great day listening to the professional who call themselves weather man and woman (not to mention any names Weather Channel and Acu weather) oops did I say that (LOL)

Ken & Cheryl, and to all my friends sorry for missing such a great day, was all prepared to go until I got weather up date... next time I'm just going to scrap the report and go old school.

It was great!!! Water current was great. Weather was sunshine all day.
Hit little rain on my way there this morning, but had no rain there all day. So everyone that did rsvp and did not make it missed a wonderful paddle. We need to make this paddle next year.

Rain is the only thing that will stop us for being out there this Sunday. It was a good time this spring and looking forward for it again. Question. Is there a special meetup for our group and just hope that we all meet up along the river?

How far from Cleveland is this?

    August 14, 2012

    • Ron Tabb

Virginia, my wife and I drove from the westside of Cleveland and it was about an hour and 45 minutes taking rte 322. I think that it would be a little faster taking 422 this time.

@Dougvy...basically I think Ken is saying that you drop your boat at the "put-in", drive your car to the spot where we get out, and they shuttle you back to the "put-in"..
