Something to think about... my company, element14 (aka Newark aka Farnell aka Premier Farnell) wants to hold a hackerspace challenge to build a project with the BeagleBone Black. Pumping Station: One has been selected and also Leeds Hackspace (in UK where our corp HQ is). It will be a friendly competition - 1st place $1,000 donation, 2nd place $500, so either way there is a benefit. We'd create a blog post on element14 Community to show our project and the winner would be determined based on number of "Likes".

Originally the marketing manager who proposed this was talking about early May but now I think we'll aim for late May or early June to start the competition. I believe the "official" timespan would 1 or 2 weeks. I'll post once I know the confirmed dates.

Those interested in the BBone Black, please post any cool ideas you might have (maybe here in Discussion tab on the NERP meetup page?). I'll be in SF Bay Area from May-13 through May-22, so my next NERP would be June-6.

Feel free to email me too: pdp7pdp7 on gmail. I might not pay very much attention to this page while I'm traveling.

Cheers!

I'm back from California and have an extra BeagleBone Black for this. Anyone have any ideas? I know some had suggested using the PRU.

For those interested in the real-time functionality of the BeagleBone, checkout this post: http://www.element14....

Talking to Ed and Jay, I think there is interest in using it to create stepper motor pulses

FYI - here's the details:

HADUKEN! element14 are challenging two hackerspaces local to their US and UK offices to create a project using the awesome new Beaglebone Black. Each hackerspace has been given a Beaglebone Black and has just 4 weeks to submit their project on the element14 community where members will then vote for their favorites. Both hackerspaces will each receive a $500 donation to their groups to help with running costs and the winning group will receive a bonus $500!

Monday June 10th
A blog post on element14 (Beaglebone area) will announce and launch the challenge. The post will cover some background on each hackerspace

Monday June 10th to Friday July 5th
Each hackspace will work on their projects over a four week period posting frequent blogs on the Beaglebone area with updates on their projects. We will heavily promote these blogs on our social media channels and would ask that our participating hackspaces would also promote within the local and global hackspace community.

Monday July 8th to 19th
Community members will be asked to vote for which of the hackerspaces using the vote functionality on element14 and also on a specially created tab on the element14 Facebook page. The total number of votes will then be aggregated with the winner being announced on July 19th

As a reminder, the plan is to meet tonight 7pm at PS1 to start discussing the project ideas and implementations. Ed B and I will be there. Anyone else with interest is welcome. If you can't make it, I'll followup with a thread for discussion. We may setup a seperate mailing list and/or wiki page if needed.

Cheers,
Drew
