This is just a reminder that we have the NSPN New to Sea Kayaking Workshop pool session next Saturday, May 11, 1:00-3:30 at the Haverhill High School Pool, 137 Monument Street, Haverhill, MA 01832. The session is for those people who filled out the form on April 20th. Email me if you would like to attend as we have an alternate list for cancellations. Please inform me if you cannot attend. Please arrive 15 minutes early.

NSPN will provide sea kayaks, paddles, and a pfd. You are welcome to bring your own boat, but it must be washed before going into the pool. Some people like to wear light wet suits, water shoes, goggles, and nose/ear plugs. Locker rooms and showers are available at the pool.

The goal of the session is to gain familiarity with a sea kayak and to do a wet exit. Also mentioned on the form are forward stroke, edging, sweep turns, and rescues. We will go as far as time permits. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.

Big thank you to the organizers of this meetup. It was very informative, well organized and a good way to not only introduce us to the gear but a group of good, friendly, and knowledge folks, as well as answer the many questions we all had. The breakfast and lunch were unanticipated and generous add-on!

Thank you SO MUCH for yesterday! I wouldn't have guessed I'd learn all that in one session. Super informative... now I can't wait to hit the water, even if it's only in a pool!

I would like to thank the participants at the NTSKW. The other NSPN volunteers and I thought the discussions were excellent. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and informed questioning.

A number of people asked for copies of the resource lists at the front table, which I have in pdf format. I would be happy to email them as attachments from [masked]. I don't see how to do that within the meetup group website. I'll send them out to people at the other email location. Please email me there if you would like a copy.

By the way, we have a few more slots for the pool session on May 11th. Again, email me at [masked] if you would like to attend. Bob

    Hi Ruth,

During the summer, NSPN has had weekly lake practice sessions in the evening. In recent years they have been at Walden Pond on Wednesday and Chebacco Lake on Thursday evening. There may also be Salem Harbor sessions on Friday evenings. These sessions probably won't be announced until late spring or early summer, and the venues can change year-to-year. Many of the participants work on their kayak roll at the sessions. Check the NSPN website and calendar. Bob

    Hi everyone,

The plans for the NSPN NTSKW are going well. I've sent many of you the following notice from the [masked] address: In addition to the Gould Barn session on April 20th, the pool session is now scheduled for May 11, 2013 at the Haverhill High School 1:00-3:30. You can of course attend the Gould Barn workshop on April 20th without attending the pool session. NSPN will have sea kayaks available at the pool session. We do ask that you confirm the RSVP for the pool separately so we have a definite roster beforehand. I will have a sign up sheet at the April 20th session for the pool. Pool slots are limited so we may need to ask people to attend instead our (also free) lake and ocean training sessions that start later in the spring. Let's see how it goes at the Barn session.

Refreshments and a pizza lunch will be available on April 20th; so all you have to bring is interest and questions about sea kayaking. Thanks!

    Bob

    Hi Mike,

I agree with Cindy. You want a boat with toggles, deck lines, and bulk heads. I would only wear a spray skirt after practicing a wet exit a few times with a spotter to help. There will be a number of different kayaks at the New to Kayaking Workshop, and we will discuss the features to look for in a sea kayak.

Mike: if you want a kayak in which you can paddle year around, you should strongly consider a sit-in kayak that is designed to be worn with a spray skirt. Wearing a spray skirt keeps you drier and warmer. Yet, wearing a spray skirt requires you to know how to get out of your kayak should it turn over. You should take lessons to learn the appropriate skills. There are many good kayaks that would allow you to wear a spray skirt. Also, you will need a dry suit for paddling in the colder temperatures and never ever paddle alone. That is putting yourself in an unsafe situation. When purchasing, shop around and try before you buy. I purchased my kayak through LL Bean. I highly recommend them. Their customer service is world renowned. They have a great selection of kayaks in Freeport and they offer programs where you can take lessons. Hope all this info is helpful.

also, what type of kayak to buy if want to kayak year round?

  • Robert L.

    Hi Everyone,

Doug suggested that I contact through the meetup as well as the email address above. The on-the-water part of the session is May 11 at the Haverhill Pool 1:00-3:30. There will be a sign up sheet for the pool session at the Gould Barn event on April 20. Please still email me at [masked], so that we have a single list. Harley, sure OK to attend. I'll be sending out more information closer to April 20th.

    Thanks!

There was a glitch in the link to "REGISTER" for this years "New to Kayaking Workshop". As of 12:20 pm on Thursday, I have straitened it out. If you already tried to contact Bob Levine previous to the correction, please try again. [masked]
Not to add to any confusion but to elaborate a bit more, , if you used the same email address prior to this posting, it was getting rerouted to last years registrar.
Again, sorry for the confusion. Thats what I get for doing a "copy & paste".

As an added note, it is very important that you contact Bob Levine via the link on this posting to register for the NSKW as this has become a popular event and a reasonable head count in advance is needed to properly prepare and co-ordinate this venue. Thanks, Doug
