Hot Air Balloon Festival

Hello Ladies,  I am planning ahead to go to the Hot Air Balloon Festival again in June. Join us at Sunrise and tell the Gods of the weather to cooperate a little better this year!

We might even want to catch some of the other events that weekend too.

Weekend events will include a carnival, craft and commercial exhibitors, good food, Twilight 5K run, GameTime fun zone Festival of Cars, premiere youth soccer tournament, rib and corn eating contest, Rogue beer and of course morning hot air balloon launches (5:45am - 6:15am - weather pending) and NW Natural Night Glow (weather pending)!

We usually go to breakfast afterwards.

Lots of people there and everyone has a camera!  So if we don't see you before the balloons go up, meet at the gate after they launch so we can go to breakfast!

    Not so clear on how to really interact with everyone. Met a few members on my own the day on Friday at the Festival. On Saturday, I saw the same members again. Was nice meeting Rebecca, thanks for introducing yourself and being so friendly.

      These kinds of meetups are a little crazy with so many people. Usually it is a lot easier to meet other members. When there are so many people it is a lot more informal and we sometimes don't know who all was there until they post photos in the album. There is generally a specific meeting place and time so everyone can see who is shooting before we all scatter to take photos and a lot of times some of the ladies go to lunch or breakfast after so there is more interaction. First Thursday with the Portland-Beaverton group will be a lot like the balloon festival. There is usually a meeting place but a lot of people don't show up for that and post their photos later in the album. (No problem, you are welcome :) Good to meet you.)

    Someone asked me about medium format film. Either pro photo or citizens photo used to carry it. You could give them a call. Citizens has gone to mostly printing but they still may have information. Also look at Kodak's website.

    Wonderful!- I had been to a smaller balloon launch only once before at the Tulip Festival- but there were so many teams, and so many beautiful balloons today. I was great to see up-close all the work that goes into this, and such fun to see other members on the field and after at breakfast :)

    Ok, a couple questions. Do I need to buy the parking pass from the website? Is anyone carpooling? I live very close however it might be nice to save some dough and meet and ride together. The 50 of us alone will take a lot of parking spots. Also, if anyone has tips on shooting that would be great, ie tips for when it may be still dark and they are firing up the balloons. Looking forward to it, and looking forward to going back to sleep afterwards :-) (not an early morning person)

    The weather is looking good for this event. We usually go out to breakfast after. We can go to "Biscuits" near here or another place. Make suggestions if you know of a place. We have quite a crowd going also. You need to pay $5 for parking, and if you want to take the shuttle back to the parking lot, it costs $1. The baloons launch just afte sunrise, but there is lots going on before that. They are inflating the baloons. So get there early. We are right there in the midst of everyone doing their jobs, so there are so many opportunities to get action shots. You might want to bring both a wide angle and a telephoto lens. The whole thing only last a little over an hour. it goes fast!

    I have a brand new camera. I upgraded from a Sony A700 to a Sony A99. Has anyone had any experience with this model? It has some major changes from my older model.

      When I got my new camera, I found the Dummies book for my model. It sure helps to read about the tips and tricks of the model. .... bonus is that you don't have to guess how it compares to your model.

    We typically finalize the plans in the last week before an event. This event is also severely affected by weather - the balloons won't fly if it rains or there are heavy winds.

    For those of you that are not familiar with Cook Park, you can always try to visit the park before the event so that you're not trying to find your way around for the first time in the near dark. It won't be very hard to find the balloons, though, they kind of stick out, especially when they start the hot air burners!!

    Rae Lynn, Sorry to hear you are having problem. I have tried to keep up with conversations but with school have fallen behind. Are the tickets for the Fireworks available on line?
