General Meeting Photography Self and Fellow Photographer Critiques

Greeting Ladies,

It has been a while since we have had a general meeting.  Let's meet to do the following:

• get acquainted or reacquainted

• share recent images we have taken for the purpose of asking for help and critiques

• plan for furture meetups

• discuss general policies

• plan for a possible group exhibit at Hillsborro Library

If the weather is cooperative, this may be combined with a photo shoot prior to the meeting.  Any suggestion for a location close to the Beaverton Library would be appreciated.

Jenkin Estate is one idea!  Any others!

Come with ideas, suggestions, comments, concerns to make this meetup group even stronger for the new year!

Join or login to comment.

Hi Ladies, I want to buy a polarizing filter but am at a loss as to how to judge them. There is a huge range is price. Does higher price mean better quality? (sometimes but not always) I am really just getting started back so I don't want to spend a huge amount but don't want a really cheapy one either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I bought a pricey CPL (circular polarizer lens) and although it is great, I might have done better to get two less expensive polarizers because I wouldn't have to change it everytime I change my lens!

Good to see everyone and get excited about upcoming events. I loved seeing all the images and catching up on what everyone was doing. Welcome to the new members, it was wonderful seeing your work and getting your perspectives. Love that venue too!

I liked it too! We should do more of these critiques. And, I think your absolutely right about learning to speak about your photos. I'm taking it to heart as I'm terrible about doing it and need to improve!

I enjoyed this, too. How about having another in the dead of winter? The critiques were positive and informative.

What a great meeting. I was sorry I had to leave when I did. It was a long dark drive back to the Peninsula. I actually learned some things from the critique's. What an opportunity. Can't wait to see what the future brings for photo outings. Such a great group.

If you are interested in seeing our newest group exhibit, let's meet at the Elsie Stuhr Center before the meeting. Maybe at 11:30 am. The address is 5550 SW Hall which is very near where we will be meeting. Also, you may want to bring snack for the meeting to share with others.

    November 8, 2013

    • Kate

Sorry, Rae Lynn, but it looks like the Stuhr Centre is closed on Sundays, so we won't be able to see the exhibit that day: http://www.thprd.org/...

I am wondering if anyone know about Tualatin Hills Nature Park.
    http://www.thprd.org/nature/naturalareas/tualatinhillsnaturepark.cfm

I was thinking if the weather is not raining on Sunday, we could go there before the meeting for a photo shoot. Let me know if you are interested in going anyone. I hate to mention it because I just don't know if the weather will be good enough.

Not going to make it either due to other plans. A caveat re the Jenkins Estate if you are still going to plan an outing before the meeting—the hours are shortened due to its being run by an event-planning vendor. Weekdays are generally dawn to 3 pm now, and weekend times vary. When they are not officially open, the gates are locked at the main entrance, and you can sometimes gain entry through the Camp Rivendale entrance a little up Grabhorn Rd., but the parking lot is small and you have to hike back down into the park on various trails. Visiting the estate has become a hit-or-miss venture, and I'd definitely call first. Sure is beautiful, though.

Thanks Eileen for such good ideas; I will look into all ideas. Any preferences anyone. Also I will send out another email, but be prepared to bring a flash drive with 4-5 images so we can do group critiques. This is the first time I have done this, but with a little planning, we can come up with a sheet that will give us some guidelines and suggestions of how to do these critiques so people don't feel sad or too aftraid to risk showing their work. Any help with a check list would be appreciated.

    Hi Rae Lynn,
The Meetup location is showing Beaverton City Hall, but the text is referencing Beaverton Library... Is that where the meeting will be held?

    October 24, 2013

  • Eileen K.

Beaverton and Tigard are short on attractions, but one of the prettiest parks is close to where I live . . . Summer Lake Park, with a lake, a doggy park, trees and gardens (they will be pretty bare) and a beautiful setting in general. They also have an outdoor, covered picnic area that would hold a lot of people if the group wanted to brownbag a brunch, though I don't know the arrangements one has to make, and of course there is the weather factor. The park and Summer Creek (right in my back yard) run through a lovely stretch of very well populated wetlands, so there are lots of photo ops. All this is about 20 minutes from the library, and if not now, perhaps sometimes it would be a pleasant place to confab and walk around and take pictures. If we do this, I'd be happy to help with arrangements.

Sounds great! We used to live in Sterling Pointe, but are now down west of Murray, on Hart & 165th.

      October 25, 2013

    • Andrea D.

I live in that area too and would be up for a shoot any time.

  • Rae Lynn N.

The time is at 12:30 for sure for the meeting !

    October 25, 2013

  • Eileen K.

Other places you might consider for a shoot . . . Sometimes it's hard to think of the pretty places right outside your door. Twenty minutes from the meeting site is Cooper Mountain Nature Park; very pretty, over 3 miles of trails, with the caveat that the trails are steep and one must climb up after walking downhill; it's practically around the corner from Cooper Mountain Vineyards, which is on the downside of fall but still a fun place to explore and has nice valley views. Cooper Mountain Nature Park: http://www.oregonmetro.gov/index.cfm/go/by.web/id=16016. Cooper Mountain Vineyards: http://www.coopermountainwine.com/ And of course Beaverton's Tualatin Hills Nature Park, at TV Hwy and Millikan Way; great park though I haven't visited in a long time; nature center and woodsy deer-populated trails; good parking. http://www.thprd.org/nature/programs/natureparkinterpretivecenter.cfm

Stay tuned on whether it is 12:30 or 1pm. The reservations say 12:30 but the hours of operation say 1 pm. ????? I will call or ask on Saturday

    October 24, 2013

    • Rae Lynn N.

It is not the library it is the Small Community Room .. see address above! Sorry for any confusion!

Would love to attend, but I work every Sunday.

    October 24, 2013

  • Eileen K.

Rae Lynn, since you mentioned locations near the Beaverton Library, did you mean that the meeting was going to be there, or at City Hall?
Also, Beaverton Library doesn't open until 1 pm on Sundays.

    October 24, 2013

    • Rae Lynn N.

I see that the hours say 1 pm but the reservation say 12:30. I will have to ask and get back to you all.

      October 24, 2013
