Pittock Mansion and Holiday Get-together for Lunch with optional gift exchange

Greetings Ladies,

The Holidays are upon us and we have nothing on the books for a photo shoot!

Pittock Mansion is a fun place to go and has some opportunities for photos; however since it is indoors and they do not allow tripods, it can be challenging.  But that said, several of us have been and gotten some good shots, plus the grounds outside of the mansion overlook the city, so on a good weather day, you can get some great shots even of Mt Hood.

Each year volunteers and professional designers lend their time and talents to transform the museum into a holiday wonderland. From professional artisans honing their skills to Portland’s do-it-yourselfers, more than 80 volunteers will make this locally-made exhibit extra creative. In addition to the stunning decorations, shoppers will find unique holiday decorations, jewelry, books, toys, and more in the Museum Store

Admission is free for members, $10 for adults, $9 for seniors (65+), $7 for youth (ages 6 – 18), and free for children ages 5 and younger.

Check out their website: http://pittockmansion.org/events/a-locally-crafted-christmas/

It would be great to have a get-together after the visit to the mansion and a gift exchange where we bring a wrapped 8 by 10/11 with a matting and frame.  For those who want to participate, we would draw numbers and pick our gift in the order of the numbers we drew.  We have done this two or three times in the past, and its lots of fun!

Elephant's Deli was the perfect location for the holiday get together. Even though I was not able to bring a gift this time, I still had a lot of fun.

Another possibility may be Kornblatts Deli - 628 NW 23rd (just under a mile from the mansion). http://www.kornblattsdelipdx.com/
Haven't been there, but they have a good rating, and I found some pics on Google +, looks like they have a few tables and one long booth/bench with several small tables and chairs along one side. Different meal and appetizer options, and breakfast avail all day.

The only Main problem here is parking is very very difficult on NW 23rd anywhere and for 18 of us to find parking would be a challenge. Nice place and at least Elephant Deli does have a little parking lot and more side streets with some parking away from all those stores. And this is the biggest shopping weekend of the year so that could make it even more challenging. Just a thought.

Is the gift exchange a photo 8x10 or frame/matting/photo a total of 8x10?

I all just a thought about lunch at the Pittock Mansion. I have eaten there many years ago and it was at that time very crowded. They put us into a tiny little attic room so it wasn't all that comfortable. Don't know if they have expanded their operation but we might want to check to see if they can handle a large group. I would be willing to check on this if you want.

FYI: if your library participates in the Washington County Cooperative Library Services, you may be able to reserve a Cultural Pass to the Pittock Mansion, which provides (free) admission for two adults: http://www.wccls.org/lending_library/cultural_pass/pittock_mansion

I think Betty's suggestion of lunch might be great. I have not been there, but if I get a chance I will check it out. I called and they said they have room for big groups. At the Elephant Deli there is room also in the back, but sometimes it is full. In the Elephant Deli, it is really a cool place and a variety of food. The problem with both places is that the parking in that area can be a real challenge. So we might also want to carpool from another location so we don't have to have parking for 18 people. Elephant Deli does have a parking lot though. I will let you know soon Have a great Thanksgiving.

Is anyone participating in the gift exchange? If so, I am interested, but need more details, as I have not done this before. Are we matting and framing a photo of ours for someone else? I assume a mat for a 5x7 print matted to an 81/2x11 frame, yes?

    November 25, 2013

    • Rae Lynn N.

Actually, I said an 8 1/1 by 11 print and then framed if possible.

      November 26, 2013

  • Sharyn W.

I think I will not be able to do the gift exchange after all, but look forward to seeing Pittock and you all...Cheers~!

I will be visiting my daughter in Denver for Thanksgiving and won't return until late Saturday night 11/30. I won't be able to participate in the gift exchange this year as I have done in the past, but I do plan on attending.

Raelynn said 8 X 11. So that is the size I had my photo printed. Still working on getting a frame. Love, Morgine

Even though I can't make the event, I'm wondering if the suggestion for optional gift exchange could be modified to bringing a check payable to, for example, Pittock Mansion or Newspace Photography or Photo Lucida. There are so many non-profits that could use the support of those of us who are fortunate enough to have a little extra. Thanks for your consideration and have a great time!!
