We got that new idea to visit the other places as well as some of the preserves, parks, etc - places not cemetery related. We will still keep it on the nature side, hiking, views, etc.To give you better idea - we are thinking about such places as TURKEY MOUNTAIN PRESERVE (Yorktown Heights, NY), CRANBERRY LAKE PRESERVE (White Plains, NY), MOHEGAN QUARRY (Mohegan Lake, NY), CROTON GORGE PARK (Croton-On-Hudson, NY), and etc.
NY CEMETERY HIKING GROUP Welcome to the first Cemetery Hiking Meet up Group in New York area!
Why cemeteries? There are numerous vast cemeteries in NY area. Many of them are marvelous lands with spectacular Hudson Valley/ Hudson River views, Manhattan City Line views, famous bridges, great landscaping, rare plants/ trees, statues, ponds and of course old, bewitching graves, etc. You can find along the way some extraordinary examples of fine masonry, all kind of art (paintings, stone sculptures, brass/ cooper statues, stained glass, etc). Some of these cemeteries are simply beautiful each season of a year so we will try to keep going year round.
NY CEMETERY HIKING GROUP is not church or any religion-related. Hiking the cemeteries can be perfect for those who want hike in slower pace and relax in quiet, kind of solemn atmosphere. But don't expect silent sobs from organizers - shouldn't look like funeral and we have some sense of humor
Most hikes should take about 4 miles/ 2-3 hours and will take place mostly during the weekends. Most of the meet ups will take place in the morning hours because many cemeteries are closing gates early. All you need is comfortable shoes, something to drink, snack or two, charged cell, those who like to shoot photos should remember their camera, etc.
If possible we will provide maps of the cemeteries and you will receive your copy at the meeting spot.
IMPORTANT: You should come 10-15 minutes earlier, find your parking space in the cemetery's vicinity and we will meet at one of the gates.
Some of our favorite cemeteries we would like to visit more often include:
This Meeting/ Hiking Group just starts so we will add more info as it is rolling on. Some links to our picture galleries will be added along with links to Wikipedia, Cemetery's home pages, etc for more info.
