Starry Night at Sheep Hill Observatory

Hello Everyone,

I know it's a little short notice but would anyone like to join me this Sat. observing the stars, star clusters, nebula's, planets and more with a personal guided tour of our night sky through telescopes?

The Plan:
**Please keep in mind that this is a weather sensitive event. In the event of rain or clouds covering the sky, the event could be canceled. You really can't predict what the weather will do until the day of. As a result, it makes this event very difficult to plan in advance. Please check the weather for the Boonton, NJ area. If canceled, I will try to give you as much notice as possible without canceling too early and risk missing a clear night. I would suggest making back-up plans "just in-case".

*This event will be "Outdoors" the temperature is always cooler on top of the hill.  Please dress appropriately for the weather.

*Keep in mind, there are NO RESTROOM facilities on the premises.

We may be spending 1-2 hours there but at your leisure.
You may need a flash light to help you see in the parking area but please be sure NOT to point it up in the direction of the dome or telescopes...Thank you!

About Sheep Hill Observatory:
Sheep Hill Observatory is a 16-foot dome, housing an 18-inch Newtonian equatorially mounted telescope.  They are open to the public every third Friday of the month (weather permitting) starting at 8:30pm EST.

*Sheep Hill Astronomical Association (SHAA) is a non-profit Association. There is no fee for this event however, your support for any donation (whatever you feel comfortable giving) is appreciated.
Please don't forget to sign their visitors book...Thank you :-)
For more info go to:

Latitude 40.92° North
Longitude 74.41° West

For Directions and more info. please visit their web-site: http://sheephillastro...
**Note:** Once you reach the end of Ross Dr., you will hit an empty dirt parking lot. Continue straight & follow to the right up a small hill until you're in the second lot. (Please go slow). The dome will be on your left. If the lot is full, you can park in the first lot. Please keep the spaces tight to leave room for others. It's very dark up there and aren't any lights. You may need a flashlight to help you see up to the telescopes but Please, DO NOT point them up or in the direction of the telescopes or toward the dome...Thank you!

Following: We can stop at the local Dukin Donuts or the famous Mara's Cafe in Denville (15min. drive). Address: - 25 E. Main Street Denville, NJ 07834

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Look forward to seeing you!

Despite the clouds blocking our views, the changed plans to go to Mara's Cafe and Thatcher McGhee's worked out Great. Had a great time hanging out with everybody and look forward to doing something again soon!!

Even cloud cover can't ruin a good time with this group :). Looking forward to trying the observatory again.

This was super fun! Althought, we didn't get to see the stars, everyone at the pub was stars in my book. lol :)

The dancing was fun at pub with the crew and nice to meet some new people as well. Lots of fun as always. I <3 it.

Hello Everyone, As I was just speaking to Patrick who is our guide tonight and as he mentioned, the forecast now unfortunately is predicting between 60 & 70% cloud cover after 8pm and increasing throughout the night with a chance of showers. We will still be up there in-case we get to see something in the break of clouds. If not, I was thinking we could visit Mara's Cafe which is abt. 10-15min. away, in lieu of stargazing. This used to be the place we visited after our star gazing events but because they closed around 11pm, we didn't get enough time there. It is completely up to you. Or we can go to a diner. We can decide there. Look forward to seeing you either way :-) Melanie

Sounds like we are all meeting at the observatory, then deciding what to do, correct?

Yes maam! Stars and planets or a chai latte and a cupcake. Personally, I'm good either way! Haha

Looking at the weather forecast, the sky is expected to cloud over by 8:00 tonight, so it does not look good. If anyone is still interested in attempting some stargazing anyhow, I will be up at the observatory at 8:00, but there are no guarantees that we will see anything at all. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. We can always go straight out to the diner instead. I will keep an eye on the forecast and post some updates.

Weather is looking pretty good so far for tomorrow night. Mostly clear with only between 10-30% cloud cover. Please check the event prior to leaving for any updates. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow :-) Melanie

Don't worry guys. ..Melanie plans this event every couple of months as different planets and other celestial bodies become visible. Hopefully you can make it next time!
