Duke Farms Hike and Lunch

May 18 (Sun) 10am to 2pm: Duke Farms: Traipse around a tobacco millionaire heiress’ overgrown backyard, filled with statues and wild flowers, mansions and stables. We’ll hike around the grounds, visit the beautiful orchid garden green houses and then have lunch Farm Barn Café and watch the video in the grand stable’s visitor center. Duke Farms serves as a model of environmental stewardship and inspires visitors to become informed stewards of the land. Admission is free.

1112 Dukes Parkway West, Hillsborough, N.J. 08844

We will begin our visit to Duke Farms at the Orientation Center, housed on the first floor of the historic Farm Barn. The group will have 30 minutes to independently tour the Environmental Center before we head out to the property. Learn about the mission of Duke Farms, land stewardship and sustainability efforts on the property. Pick up a map or Eco-Kit of binoculars, compass, and field guide. At 10:30 am we will depart the Farm Barn. Duke Farms offers 18 miles of paved, gravel, wood-chipped and mown-grass trails and pathways through a variety of habitats. Our hike today will focus on approximately 3.5 miles of mostly flat trails through the heart of the property with stops along the way at several key points of interest including the Orchid Range, the Great Falls, and the Old Country Mansion Foundation. We’ll conclude our visit at 1:30 back at the Farm Barn Café for Lunch which offers a selection of healthy sandwiches, wraps, salads, snacks and beverages. There we can get more acquainted and watch the Eagle Cam.

We had a nice group of people from a variety of backgrounds. The group interacted well. Susan chose some very nice areas of Duke Farms to visit. I was impressed by the size of Duke Farms in the area available for hiking.
