Hiking in the Svaneti region (Georgia)

  • August 24, 2013 · 8:00 PM

Hi all,

I'm going to Georgia in late August for a month, but am looking for a couple of other people that would like to go hiking in the Caucus mountains (the Svaneti region specifically) for around 8 days with a couple of days in Tbilisi and one or two other places. It would be around 12-13 days all up if you would like to join me for this part of the trip.

I have to be in Armenia on the 6th September to begin a tour, which I've already paid for so am definitely going. I haven't booked flights yet, but am looking to fly out around 24th August. Flights are around 400 euros return. It's pretty cheap there so costs won't be high and would likely be staying in guest houses/home stays.

Anyway, if anyone is interested get in touch, I'm not looking to do super long walks, or any technical climbs, mostly I'm interested in photography and getting out into some mountain scenery.

I'm only wanting a few people to join maximum, and should be fairly easy going and be responsible for your own travel. It's quite safe there, and is becoming more popular every year...It's changing fast though which is why I want to do it now.

So I just booked my flights, I'm flying out on Friday night 23rd August at 23:55 on Turkish airlines. Amsterdam to Tbilisi. It's 351 euros return at the moment. So whoever is interested, I can arrange a meet up maybe weekend of 16/17 March, or the weekend afterwards.

Who is available on the 16th March (Saturday) Sometime in the afternoon would be best for me. Not sure where it would be yet, depends on who wants to come along and chat about the trip.

    Cheers Matt

Hi Claire, yes it's still possible. The only plans so far are to agree to meet up somewhere in a couple of weeks to have a chat about the trip.

Hi Matt, that sounds good. I will start brushing up (aka learning) on my russian :-)

Hi Katie, I'm off to the UK for business for a bit, but I'll book my flights in about 2 weeks, as I'm going no matter if no one else eventually goes. This will help people know it's on for sure. I don't think flights will sell out anytime soon, so, how about once I book my flights we can agree on a meet up and chat about the trip, I guess in about 2-3 weeks?

No problems if people drop out, it's quite normal on these things. I've organised a few trips like this sort of thing before in expat groups, so I have a fair idea of what I'm doing, but haven't been to this region before...someone with a smattering of Russian would be really helpful, as English is fairly rare there.

I'll post once I've booked tickets, but just to be of help, those dates I've already mentioned are unlikely to change.

    Cheers Matt

Shall we aim to meet this coming week as Matt is keen to book his flights?
I have already been looking at some photos of the area and it looks spectacular and quite an adventure to get there if you take the bus from tbilisi :-)

Hi Matt, this sounds very interesting but maybe a good idea to meet for a drink first to discuss what kind of trip it would be before committing to it :-) for example I love hiking but prefer day walks from a base rather than hiking with full pack from one place to another. Would also be up for some general sight seeing and photography days as well. Katie

I'm potentially also very interested, but agree with Katie that we should meet and discuss this in person.

Hi all, I'll book my flights in about 2 weeks, and then can give firm dates, and then whoever wants to meet up and chat about the trip, we can organise some place to meet. Katie, that's my idea too, day walks without full packs.
