Amstel Gold Race (Meetup version)

Amstel Gold Race takes place every April in Valkenburg (near Maastricht). Challenging track because of the mountainous terrain. There are 2 versions: the race and the casual biking. Both are already sold out for 2014. So we'll go biking of our own on a different date. There are tracks ranging from 65KM to 250KM. We can either do 100KM or the 125KM. Check out all the details:

Main site: http://www.amstel.nl/evenementen/amstelgoldrace
(You'll be asked to enter your date of birth on your first visit to "check" if you are 18, because the main sponsor is Amstel beer :)

100KM: http://www.amstel.nl/evenementen/amstelgoldrace/toer/routes/100km

125KM: http://www.amstel.nl/evenementen/amstelgoldrace/toer/routes/125km

Valkenburg is easily accessible both by train and car. Needless to say, you need a good racing bike for these tracks.

Update (22 May 2014):

* Travelling from train from Amsterdam:

08:37 from Amsterdam Centraal, reaching Valkenburg at 11:24   Check ns.nl for more info
* I am planning to drive down there and I'll meet you guys outside Valkenburg station. My nr: [masked]
* GPS track: http://files.meetup.com/1065208/Amstel%20Gold%20Race%20100KM.gpx
* Please bring enough water and food to eat on the way. Not sure if we'll find restaurants when we need them
* If you have a bike repair kit, please bring it along.
* Weather is not so great, but it's just 2mm of rain. I don't think that should discourage us :)

Hey people, hope you all reached home safe. I was so tired & sleepy (was it the Brand beer?) that I had to drive very carefully with both hands holding the steering tightly ;) Took a long coffee break & reached home just around midnight. Anyway, we had a great day & see you all soon :)

I'm going from Amsterdam and will be around 8:25 on the platform. My phone is 0634991784. Also, I have a meereis ticket I should use so if someone wants to go for 12.99 (with return) let me know (ticket for a bike should be bought separately).

Hi guys, what's going to be the average speed with your group? Do you stay one night in Valkenburg or you come back to Amsterdam the same day?

    May 19, 2014

    • Venkat

Fabio, you haven't RSVPed yet. Are you joining? :)

      May 23, 2014

    • Fabio

Hi Venkat, thanks for asking. I guess not because I have to train for the 170km race next week in the Belgium Ardenne and average speed of this event is unfortunately too low..I would have enjoyed but then I should probably leave the group too soon to follow a proper training. :-/

Hi. I am an average casual cyclist and I only use bike for everyday needs. I am in good shape though :) I am thinking about buying a racing bike. Do you think this route is a good way to start or I need to practice and prepare myself before coming? If yes, then what would you recommend?

    May 22, 2014

    • Fabio

Before doing 100km you need at least few months of training with the race bike. However, this group won't go fast at all(18-20km/h average), but the km planned are quite a lot for a first experience..this is my advice

      May 22, 2014

    • Venkat

Good tip by Fabio. In addition, this is a hilly terrain. So I don't want this trip to discourage you completely. And after going all the way down south, you might be disappointed that you could not enjoy the trip as you wished. Start with smaller distances, closer to home.

Folks, please update your RSVP if you cannot make it anymore. I'll soon send out more details

    May 18, 2014

  • Venkat

Thanks Gaurav for pointing out that there's construction work going on in the tracks till 16 April and so we can't travel by train with our bikes. I've moved the event to 24th May. Hopefully you all can still make it. If lot of people can't make it on the new date, let's discuss and pick another date.

Late May is even better! Though i don't plan so long in advance.and also let's be flexible about the weather. I'd suggest to check the forecast one week before. It's a long ride, we need good weather

Hi, bikers) Coul you answer for my questions about meetup version of AGR? Why we meet in Valkenburg Train Station (AGR starts near Maastricht)? Will we cycling with map of AGR or you have your own route?
    Thanks=)

    February 15, 2014

    • Venkat

Kate: AGR starts in Valkenburg, Prins bernardlaan. Check the turn-by-turn route description in the links above. I meant Valkenburg is near Maastricht. Yes, we'll be following the official route of AGR using GPS map ...

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
