Herrera Hoodoos at Sunset

  • This location is shown only to members

  • A Herrera Canyon trip to hike around and explore the red rocks, hoodoos, and unspoiled desert views that will end with watching the sunset from this rock garden playground. The evening light will only enhance this area, which faces west, for photography.

We are all very fortunate that we already have some wonderful folks that are able to drive us to the location! We will need only one more truck or SUV driver to sign up to take all 12 attendees, so I'm limiting the attendance to 12 for now. If others on the attendance or wait list volunteer to drive that have trucks/SUV's then I will increase the attendee limit accordingly so that more can go.

We will meet at Smith's at 4:00 PM and setup carpooling with our drivers, then head out to Herrera via Paseo Del Norte westbound to I-40. Our destination is about 33 miles out. Detailed directions given at Smith's. We will leave Herrera just after sunset to come home.

Expect to bring $10 for your driver for gas, water, sturdy hiking shoes or boots, sunscreen, hat, snacks, tripod if you have one, and of course, your camera! If you have hiking poles or a walking stick bring it along.

Valerie, I had other fish to fry anyway :-)

I saw your earlier comments about "just going for it", and while at Home Depot on Montano faced gale force winds, I happened to think of you, and hoped you had seen the better part of valor! Glad to see you listened to reason. No issues with taking photos in inclement weather, however, blowing sand and dust rarely make for the best of pics, and can play havoc with your lenses. Live to fight another day!

I'm sorry if could not find Smith's on Golf Course Road. But would it be better if the meetup for these gatherings was well within walking distance from a bus stop? I'm sorry if I'm not able to afford a decent automobile. I think the Central Avenue area would be
a far more appropriate place for these gatherings.

How about just doing it? Hoodoos For Idiots? (I don't know how to get there from Smith's)

      March 23, 2013

    • Frances R.

Haha, John! After being out and about in the cold wind today I'm sooooo glad that I wasn't out there freezing this evening! ;-) We would have been idiots indeed! LOL!

Too bad about the wind. Smart decision but I'd have had fun in a dust storm because I don't look for perfect postcards :-)

Me too! :) So bummed about the weather forecast.

      March 22, 2013

I've made the decision to cancel this meetup. We will have to try again in better weather and a better setup for a pretty sunset without the overcast skies we've been having a lot lately. I'm guessing end of April, early May with the way my schedule is looking. I want to thank all of those of you who volunteered to drive the group out there! We couldn't plan trips like these without you! :)

    I agree. Too windy.

I realize that I had signed up for the same trip next Friday evening & I would prefer to go in nice weather.

I've been checking the weather reports from our local stations and so far they seem to agree on winds of 23 MPH with possible high gusts tomorrow afternoon. I hate the wind, so I wouldn't blame anyone for canceling. If the forcast looks too ugly this evening, I may reschedule this meetup for another Saturday. If anyone is game despite the winds, as long as a driver or two is among the group of hardy souls, I'd still go with you, in addition to rescheduling the "real" meetup for another day. Feel free to chime in here so that we all have an idea of the final count/plan/etc. Thanks all! Been hoping Mother Nature would be more cooperative, but she might win this one!

I agree the wind may make it tough to take pictures

I also don't like the way the clouds have been making it so gray and overcast, like right now as I type this. No pretty sunset light and colors in this weather!

I'm sorry to say I have to pull out again. I hope there is room for someone.

the NOAA weather site is predicting blowing dust and 45 - 50 mph winds tomorrow night for ABQ. So I think I will bow out. too bad, it sounds cool!

work schedule change. take my spot someone.

Quick reminder; be sure to bring water, $10 gas money, light snack, hat, hiking boots, walking stick, and a warm jacket - remember it will get chilly out there as the sun goes down. This is a wilderness area so you will only have what you take with you.

    March 20, 2013

With Wanda joining us everyone gets to go! Thanks all! :)

Thanks Cris! One more volunteer - you guys are great!

Laura volunteered to drive so I was able to add 4 spots, thanks Laura! :) The drivers are making this happen for the rest of us, so be sure to give them a big thanks at the meetup! :)

    need ride if I can

    March 13, 2013

    • Frances R.

Alvin, not to worry! Everyone on the attendee list has a ride. If I get more high clearance vehicles singed-on I can add more attendees, but those already on are who we can take for now.

I've added one of my photos from our destination to give you a taste of where we're going. This was taken mid day, can't wait to see this place at sunset.

I just received an invite in which I responded to a question that was asked only to get a response saying I am on a waiting list when the original invite showed 7 spots available.

So I not going to play this game of waiting to see I a spot opens. Please remove me from the waiting list.

    March 13, 2013

    • Frances R.

Lorie, You can remove yourself from the waiting list if you like by changing your RSVP. If others replied before you did then it sends you to the wait list.

      March 14, 2013

    • Frances R.

I went ahead and removed you at your request.
